98 ford exp engine i.d

hey guys and gals
i have a 98 ford explorer with the 4.0 engine the 8th digit of the vin # is X that is the push rod type engine correct? i thought that 98 started the sohv engine ? what model engines will work in my explorer for a replacement? mine has according to my local ford dealer #2 cylnder down they didnt know if it was piston or valve but when cold it runs fine and doesnt miss but when it gets up to operating temp it misses at idle very bad but runs good on highway ? any suggestions????????

X = 4.0 L OHV pushrod.

E= 4.0 L SOHC

P = 5.0 L EFI

All were available from 97 thru 99, probably other years also. Just happened to have checked those models yesterday.
