im haveing a serious problem finding a flywheel for this swap. im guessing that ford didnt pair standard transmissions with the 351W, because no one seems to carry the fly wheel's for them in stock. i know i cant use the I6 flywheel because of the balance issues, can i use a 302 flywheel on a 351W? where can i get a flywheel for this engine? also, can i use the same clutch plate that the I6 used? also, there seems to be alot of "teeth" options for the flywheel's, can i use my stock I6 starter with the 351W? or do i gota buy a new starter? what should i do about the teeth?
You can use the flywheel for a pre 80 302... same imbalance (28.2 ounces) Lots of 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks were built with the 351W and T18 or T19 and ZF series 5 speeds, all through the 80s and until 97. The 351W has a 28.2 ounce imbalance for all of its production years, while the 302 switched to a 50 ounce imbalance in 1980. The I6 starter is different than the 302/351W starter. You will probably want to get a new clutch set, I don't think you can use the 300-6 set with the V8, but I am not sure.
im not sure what tranny is in my truck, all i know is that its a 4 speed, and it was bolted to an inline six. if i had to guess, id say it was the NP435 but im not sure. ive called all the local junk yards (and some not local ones) and none of them have a flywheel that came off a 351W. does anyone know a part number or something for a cheap aftermarket flywheel for this engine? the flywheel is the only major thing holding me back for this swap
how many teeth did the 351w's flywheels come with stock?
ive been looking around online and ive come across 3 sites that are almost identical. http://www.partsandaccessories.com/ and http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/ and http://www.thepartsbin.com/ is this some kind of scam? all 3 of them list the same parts, at the same price and use the same advertisements. i came across a fairly cheap flywheel by "sachs" for 107.70 on their site's and it says free shipping too. has anyone ever dealt with one of these sites before?
alright, i think i might just try and get a machine shop to put the 28.2oz imbalance on my I6 flywheel. any idea how much this would cost or what would be a "good price" on this job? all they are doing is just drilling a few holes or adding a weight right? so i cant see it costing more than 100 dollars. also, if i just ask for the imbalance to be put on, are they gona know exactly where to put it?
Your crank has offset bolt holes so it lines up with the counterweight on the harmonic balancer.
I don't know if the 300 uses the same setup as far as bolt hole alignment, as the 302/351W, so you could be in for an expensive learning experience or a real money saver...
