rear end and engine swap?
i was burning some rubber and something broke in the rear. i know it was stupid. but i have 2 trucks so its not that bad. it clicks as i drive but it does drive in 4 wheel. what is it most likely? i am changing the wole rear probably from a rusted truck for only $150.
also can i hook a 460 right up to my 390 transmisiion in this 72 f250? or will it be costly and difficult? it is a married transfer case? the motor is blowing a lot of smoke ince i bought it, and there is no power. so rebuild the 390 or replace it? my 73 has 460 and i love it.

ok thank you. is it better to buy new parts than whole used rear? i can get what the guy calls a floater rear the whole thing for 150?
i guess it depends on what we have. mine does not have a inspection cover i have to drop it form the front. he does not what size his is either.. . is there an easy way to tell what we have?. i have decided to rebuild the motor this summer.

Mike, The F250 would have a Dana 60 in it already. When looking for a replacement you will need to use the same ratio as it needs to match the ratio of the front. It sounds like you are driving in front wheel drive.
No the 460 will not bolt up to the FE tranny, different bolt patterns.
If your pockets are deep enough you can put gears and axles in there that are harder to tear up.

Most 1/2 ton trucks use a semi-floating axle (like the Ford 9 inch). On the carrier side the axle just slides into the pinion assembly, on the wheel end there is a pressed on bearing that bears the weight of the truck.
Full floating rear ends are very sturdy and carry a lot of weight - they are extra heavy duty devices designed for loaded, working trucks. For speed, gas economy, and ride the less masive 9 inch may be a better choice.
