i was burning some rubber and something broke in the rear. i know it was stupid. but i have 2 trucks so its not that bad. it clicks as i drive but it does drive in 4 wheel. what is it most likely? i am changing the wole rear probably from a rusted truck for only $150.
also can i hook a 460 right up to my 390 transmisiion in this 72 f250? or will it be costly and difficult? it is a married transfer case? the motor is blowing a lot of smoke ince i bought it, and there is no power. so rebuild the 390 or replace it? my 73 has 460 and i love it.

more than likely you messed up the spider gears in the third member or messed up the ring and pinion in the rear.... try to find you a Dana 60 rear for replacement.... i dont think the 460 will bolt up to the 390 tranny because i think the bellhousing is different
ok thank you. is it better to buy new parts than whole used rear? i can get what the guy calls a floater rear the whole thing for 150?
i guess it depends on what we have. mine does not have a inspection cover i have to drop it form the front. he does not what size his is either.. . is there an easy way to tell what we have?. i have decided to rebuild the motor this summer.
Mike, The F250 would have a Dana 60 in it already. When looking for a replacement you will need to use the same ratio as it needs to match the ratio of the front. It sounds like you are driving in front wheel drive.
No the 460 will not bolt up to the FE tranny, different bolt patterns.
If your pockets are deep enough you can put gears and axles in there that are harder to tear up.
one of the weak spots in a Dana 60 is the cross shaft in the spiders
Did you have a lot of wheel hop during the burnout? That would do it. You can probably go to the salvage yard and get the parts easy. Rebuild that 390, a good one will drag a 460 off.
i know not much help but i found rear end parts from a guy in the rear of the magazine .. cant for the life of me rember who it was but to my suprise it was really reasonable .. you could get spideres pins , shims hole kits what ever you needed ... russ
so this may be a dumb question wut is a floting rear end
The drive axle does not carry the weight of the truck. The axle housing bears the full weight of the truck rather than the axle shaft. The shaft "floats" as it does not carry any of the truck's weight, it just transfers power to the rear hub.
Most 1/2 ton trucks use a semi-floating axle (like the Ford 9 inch). On the carrier side the axle just slides into the pinion assembly, on the wheel end there is a pressed on bearing that bears the weight of the truck.
Full floating rear ends are very sturdy and carry a lot of weight - they are extra heavy duty devices designed for loaded, working trucks. For speed, gas economy, and ride the less masive 9 inch may be a better choice.
