What kind of milage should I expect from a 360 motor in a 1969 f100? It seems to run pretty clean but I am curious what it should be achieving. Thanks!

With some good carb tuning, adding electronic ign like Petronix and dual exhaust, 12mph or greater is not out of the question. IMHO
10 mpg like clockwork when I first got it. I've been adding acetone to it and I'll get between 12-13. If I stop using acetone it drops back down to 10.

What percentage do you add? I have never heard of doing that it sounds interesting.
marmet, There is a thread on acetone either on this forum or 61-66, I don't remember which. Acetone is a solvent, of all of the reaserch that I have read on the subject, it cleans the system and will get a little increase in mpgs. In most instances after one or two treatments no more increase is noticed.
Yeah, there was some website that said big oil companies don't want anyone to know this dirty little secret because if it gets out gasoline sales will go way down. According to the article 3.5 oz per 10 gal is optimal. So that's what I do. I keep a quart of acetone in the truck and a small plastic bucket from Walmart that has oz measurements on the side. I drove the truck for a year and always got 10 mpg. With acetone it goes right up to 12-13. If I stop using it it will drop back down to 10 in a couple tanks.
i just brought mine back from nc to wv 390, duel 2 1/2 exhuast, headers, fact. 2 barel carb . 3 on the tree dont know rear end gearing (witch will lead to my post ) pulling a home made 69 long bed trailor .. from what we belive is 75 mph it turns just under 3 grand .. 8.5 mpg ... not to happy with that would like to see 18 but from what ive read that is a dream lol does my rpms seem in check with every one eleses ?? id like to see it under or around 2000- 2500 ... russ
Russ, @ 75mph just under 3000 rpms is pretty darn close. I am gonna guess that you have a 3.25 rear. My setup has a 3.00 behind a C6 and the rpms is not far from yours. At 55 mph my rpms are 2050. My last run, empty going and a FE against the tailgate coming back I got just under 14 at those speeds. I am running a smaller 4 barrel carb than your 2 barrel. Both the trailer and mountains would detract from that number I'm sure.
Our trucks are flying boxes with no dynamics. An overdrive tranny is the only way to get the rpms down. 390s have been known to get 18 mpgs in cars but that is a strech for a pickup.
I was messing with my timing a while back and ended up setting it to about 20 deg BTDC. That was where it would run without pinging. And it ran the same as it does when it is at 8-14 BTDC. It is my daily driver so it only gets driven around town. 10mpg w/o acetone and 12-13 with. At 20 BTDC on the highway I got 17 mpg. All I'm guessing is that 20 is a great setting for highway driving.
