Rear gear recommendations

Hi All,
I have 95 XLT SWB 4.9 m5od 2.73. I want to regear and add a posi but dont know exactly what would be a good ratio. I was thinking of 3.08 or 3.27. I dont want to go any lower because I dont tow all the time and would like to keep my mpg Close to where it is now(18-20). Any suggestions from similar setups would be great.

what size tires are you running? that is the major determining factor.

If you are still running stock tires I would say a 3.31 or 3.55 if you don't tow or haul heavy. I have the 6 with 3.55 gears and the M5OD and get 18.5 to 19.5 hwy if I keep my foot out of it.

I am running the stock tires. I dont tow heavy, just an enclosed 6x10 single axle trailer once in a great while to move some household goods.

i would go in the area 3.30 or 3.50s, you will have better off the line with 3.55s but less top end and the reverse with 3.30s, but there is very little room between both of them so it will probably be hardly noticable.

When you really think about it, what good are 2.73 gears? The truck cant get out of its own way let alone tow or haul anything without frying the clutch. I dont get it. I am seriously considering 3.27 or 3.55 gears.

you aint the 1st one to wonder that. they usedto know what they were doing, almost all 4wheel drive half tons had 3.50s the 2wds had 3:1 and the 250 high boys had 4.10's. now it just seems like they throw what ever they want in there and call it good.

I think I am going to go with the 3.27 gears. I am kinda concerned with my overall rpms at 65-70. Right now with 2.73s it is turning 1600@65 mph in 5th gear. With 3.27s,it goes to 1900 @ 65 mph. Granted the 2.73s keep the highway rpms down but it cant pull for squat. I will have to check my math to be sure.

I have the same set up as you do in one of my truck when I changed to 3.55's I run about 2000rpm at 65mph and about 2200rpm at 70mph and I actually started getting better milege after I changed the gears. Iwas getting about 16.5-17 mpg now I get about 18-18.5 mpg. If I keep my foot out of it.

Now I am thinking of going with 3.55s because (1) they are free and (2) they are only 100 rpms away from the 3.27s. I am probably splitting hairs here but want to get it right the first time. On a separate note, is there any mpg to be lost between a limited slip and an open diff? I also wanted to put in a limited slip while I was at it and my unkle seems to think they cost horsepower in the turns while in operation. I dont do mudding or any of that sort of thing but whenever I did get stuck for some reason or other, I always said my next truck will have a posi. Lets just say he kind of got me thinking otherwise. What do you guys think?

That's *really* splitting hairs. Yes, there will be some loss when turning, but just how much of your drive is straight vs. turning? I think for most people it's mostly straight. FUrthermore, that loss is very small in comparison to other losses, and measuring something that's probably less than 0.1 mpg is a moot point.
