hey everyone, I was wondering what the time delay should be when you have a manual gglowplug switch installed. (How long should it be held in?) I think I may have fried my new glowplugs again casue it is getting hard to start. Anyone?
Cheers,
Jeff
Also if the GP system is working then you might be having the "classic air getting into the fuel system" problem that seems to crop in about this age of truck.
I bypassed my relay and have a manual system too. I hold it for 10 sec. in the morning, I have an 84 F350 with the 6.9. Check for fuel at the filter while cranking by pushing in on the bleed valve on the filter housing(looks like a tire valve, push it in with a screwdriver while somebody cranks the engine) and test your glow plugs also by removing the wire to each one, then putting a test light alligator clip to the positive terminal of one battery, and touch the sharp end of the test light to the tip of each glow plug after you remove the wire from each one. If it does not light up it's bad.
i DO HAVE A DROP WHEN i HIT THE SWITCH, THERE IS A CLICK AND THE PLUGS ALL LIGHT UP THE TEST LIGHT, ANY CLASSIC AREAS i SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR SUCTION LEAKS IN THE FO SYSTEM?
If the return lines on the injectors have never been changed. I would change them first and the return line from the IP to filter. Problem is that air will seep in but the fuel is thicker and will not leak out. So if you see cracks in the lines on the hoses then there is where the air is getting into the system. There are many threads on this that will also help you out. But this is a starting place and I hope this is where the problem lies. On my 93 this last summer I had to replace a part of the fuel line from the tank to motor. Found a very small fuel leak under a white clip on the frame and that let air in. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thanks all! I must have some leakes it is getting really hard to start... and now my oil pressure gage seems to want to work and not work.. ... maybe I donnot have oil pressure??? I don't know... maybe a wire loose.. I just put in a stereo and started to notice the light was on... and does anyone know what the somp capaity is on this engine.. I heard 2.5 gallons with filter and it still reads low on my stick....huh... thanks again everyone..
With a small filter 10 quarts of oil.
A mechanical oil gauge is the best route.
I left the stock dash gauge hooked up and installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge.
Looking at the two of them is funny. One is high, the other is low. Then they swap readings. The dash gauge is not even worth looking at.
Where did you hook up the pressure gage from? I was thinking about doing this as well, but I was going to go into the oil gallery at the same place as the stock sender, but I would like to just leave it hooked up as well.
yeah I got the feeling I have the wrong dipstick in my ride, there is an extra etched line (below the low part mind you, but a line that seems to be added right at 10 quarts.
Hey I am looking to tighten up my fuel system and resove my glow plug issues once an for all. although my glow plugs will light up a test light like there is no tommorrow, I foung that the juice may not be getting through to all of them as well due to poor contact with the connector that plugs into the top, do you know where I can pick up a harness like this or just the connectors?
my fuel system shows wetting all over the place, especially on the resturn line connections, do you know where I can buy the hoses, orings and the copper gaskets from? I will post another throead to inquire, but being the master at hand that you are here, I would assume you may know. Anyways, thanks again I got a little money this week so I wanna really nail it down.
I ot my hoses and clamps from my local IH truck/farm equipment dealership. took one off and took it with me so they could geive me the correct size. put on new claps. I measured the total distance for all the hose and they had it on a bulk reel. Don't remember what it cost but it was a lot less than ford OEM parts.
Be careful when pulling the plastic caps off the injectors to replace o-rings and remove all of them on one side before you start taking lines off so you can pull straight away from caps. The plastic caps get very brittle if they are old and they add up if you have to replace all of them. $70-$80 for the whole set at the dealer. I think I broke 3 first time I did it.
Hope thats clear
