Code Reader Recommendations?
I got a '93 f-150 4.9L 2 wheel drive auto trans. jus' plain ol' pickup. It stutters at slow speed. I guess I need a code reader. It's had the basic plugs cap wires somethin' in the distributor replaced. I want something that give readable numbers not a flashing light that you got to count the flashes. Is there somethin' a guy can get for less the $100. I tried to find one on this site and failed. I'm not a big fan of this code stuff 'cause the little bit I did do always said at the end of a long and complicated troubleshooting procedure to try a new gizmo of whatever end it was indicating to work on. Gizmos are spendy. Need to try and narrow the search a little. bjr23

Code readers are, for the most part, a waste of money. They will tell you the code, but you can't do anything about the code without knowing why it was set. An oxygen sensor code doesn't necessarily mean the oxygen sensor is bad, and the same is true of every other code. Most auto parts stores will scan codes for free. If all you want is the codes I would give that a try.
