does anyone have experience with universal inline electric fuel pumps? The unit I'm thinking of using is the 8228 Airtex. It will go on a 1992 Hyundai Elantra inline with the intank pump still installed. I'm hoping the pump will pull thru the intank unit. I've replace two of the intank units and want a external unit now. Tired of all the labor of replacing them only to get a brief period of operation. bjr23
Usually the high pressure frame pumps will not form any suction. This isn't always the case, but I wouldn't take that chance. Most need a pump in the tank to boost fuel up to the high pressure pump external to the tank.
I have a dual tank E350 bus that has inline pumps drawing thru the intank pumps. IMHO it is worth a try. Squirt a little ATF/Oil etc in the inline pump to help with the initial prime. Make sure your filter is between the pump and your injectors. Replace the filter also.
I am replacing the intank pump in my son's Contour tomorrow. The external HP pumps I found were twice as expensive as the intank unit. The Contour requires that I take out the rear seat to access the pump which is much better than dropping the tank!
I priced the intank replacement for the Hyundai it was $185 which would be the third pump, for it and the external inline is $105 Airtex brand. Still not cheap, but, if I ever want rid myself of this car I got to make it stay running somehow. It's my daughters car and she drivin' a '01 oldsmobile now cause we never could keep ,the Hyundai a real money pit, running for very long. bjr23
My Ford Contour in-tank pump was $99 or $128 depending on which brand and where I got it. Since it was hard to get at I used the $128 Carter pump from NAPA.
