The single pattern cams have the same lobe for the intake and the exhaust. The duel pattern is a more advanced design. For the FE the exhaust has more lift and dur. This is designed to increase exhaust flow.
A single pattern cam has the same duration spec. on the exhaust as on the intake lobe- 268 int/268 exh. A dual pattern cam has different durations for intake and exhaust- 278 int/292 exh. Numbers like the second set will give you a very lopey idle and a crack to the exhaust but it really only pulls hard after 2500 rpm. Cams around 268 will give you better torque and pull off the line a lot harder.
i think alot of y'all will think im full of it.but i did a 460 conversion and i put the performer cam, intake, and carb on the engine. then i run a 3" exhuast all the way to the back with 24" mufflers (a straight thru type)not a glass pack. i went from 6.7 mpg with the original 400m to 16.4 mpg with the 460 (yes it had L&L headers on it). i know this sounds like
BS. but i drive a semi truck fer a living so i do know how to add my mpg's properly. this was done a 78 SUPERCAB long bed 4x4
F250 at that time i had 33" tires i now have 38.5" tires and have not did the mpg on it. as it is in the shop getting new paint. i will put pics in the gallery when done. and yes i did the 6" lift and the 460 myself.
