I dunno if any were used on FORDS, but they were common at one time, and I ran into one on a 440 today.
Man those were strange old carbs! Strange enough that we once called them Carterators, as above - they were different. Sort of a half step between a Holley and a Quadrajet Roach...
Anyone know if there is a techbook or current website for carter thermoquads and such?
What you probably saw was a Carter AVS (Air Valve Secondary. It was used by Chyrsler on their big block and some small blocks from 1968 up into the mid 70s. It was to try and help the Carter mechanical secondary bog problem. The alternate for this was a Chrysler designed Holley 4160 that was full of problems. I can probably find some specs on them. As for the Thremo-Quad (Thermobog) it was another step to eliminate or alleviate the Chysler hot start problem. It again had a spring loaded air valve, and this time used a Rochester Quadrajet style choke pull-of dashpot system. Carter never used secondary metering rods in any of their designs, they did, however, build a bunch of Quadrajets for Pontiac that actually said Carter on them. I have a Carter manual somewhere on what is refered to as the "air bled" Thermoquad. I also have an oddity, a 1974 California 460 Thermoquad, that has a Ford downshift rod and hot air choke. I can see what I still have if you want more information on either. I used to own a carburetor and tune-up shop here in Newport News.
