Did anybody see the show on Speed last night where they showed Jay Leno's "customized" Olds Toronado?
Converted to rear wheel drive.
Twin turbo 427.
1076 HP.
This thing was a riot. It seemed to have been built for the expressed purpose of looking as goofy as an Olds Torondao looked (which is kind of goofy in my book) while being able to smoke rear tires at a moment's notice.
It was really funny to see that big lead sled spin the tires at 40-50 mph.
I saw that on TLC's rides when they built it. They had it at SEMA one year. I think in 2004. It's pretty awesome but I think it is UGLY as all get out but, Jay seemed to have liked it, he said it just screamed American Car. I was watching some other show I think it was car crazy (i don't really care for it but it was the only car show on at the time) they were looking at a 32 ford i think it was that Jay had put all corvette stuff on. it was all chevy except the body, and thats what they wanted.
I thought the car was ugly not necessiarily the body style but the gold color. I didn't like the rims they put on the car either, they look like the front wheels on a dually. http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/6415463079.jpg&s=x10
This picture make the car look very good, and this is the best picture I've seen of the car. But what was on Rides and My classic car made it look like a dull gold. I am gonna have to take back that i said it was ugly because it does look pretty good. In searching for this image i see that the reason they put that style rim on the car is because it looks like the stock rim.
I think Leno did it right. He was able to infuse a ton of performance into the car while preserving it's looks. Looks stock on the outside. As of recent, i have seen so many modded cars, thet I am taking a liking to stock looking old cars.
I would have rather he had kept the FWD and modified that existing engine/power train system which, after all, was what the Toronado was all about. BIG POWER FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
Jay Leno kept the original color and the body. But he converted it to rear wheel drive. I remember him saying on TV he allways wanted one since he was a boy. He said he fell in love with that car in that color when he first saw it on a show room.
When asked about his love for cars, Leno replied, "In Hollywood many "Stars" have many wifes and few cars. I have one wife and many cars". I envy Leno's ability to fund his passion. My wife once said that my dream house would be 3 bedrooms with a 40-car garage.
Dono
Would have added to the cool factor if he'd kept it FWD, YES!. But alas, the FWD tranmssions that were used barely held up with the stock engine, let alone a 1000+hp one. The torque alone from that engine would have ripped the transmission apart.
