E4OD Rebuild Questions

Ok so heres my problem....my E4OD is gone. I need to rebuild it. What hard parts shouldI put in there when I rebuild it to make it last and more off-road worthy? I'd like a trans that lasts longer than 200,000 miles. I am going to order an off road torque converter and a trans pack. Ford E4OD rebuild I found this website, but is this all I need to do to get the most out of my tranmission? or is there anything else anyone would reccomend.

I've never heard of an E4OD that lasted more than about 175k before it tossed its guts but hey anything is possible. If you are dealing with a pre-1993 E4OD the rebuild kit will come with the necessary replacement components to incorporate the upgrades that Ford made between the 1992 and 1993 model years. The upgrades improve the shift points and over all make the thing just a bit more reliable with slightly better cruising manners. It won't "gear hunt" as much thats for certain. There are people making aftermarket stuff for the E4OD but the more reliable overdrive transmission is the AOD which is actually more closely related to its older three speed cousin the C6. The AOD uses a TV cable/linkage instead of a vacuum regulator or relying on the ECA for control over shift points. However, if you want to swap to an AOD you will need to swap ECA's because the ECA that drives the E4OD won't work without it. All this from someone who is currently in process of replacing his SECOND E4OD! First one reached 156K and this one reached 167K before detonating.

Well I don't want ot have to get a new transmission...Although it seems it will be cheaper to. I would like my E4OD to last 200k. I guess my standards are set too high....My car is on 320,000 miles with original transmission and engine, Only recently has my third gear been acting up. I want this transmission to shift well. Also I want it to be able to handle the modifications I put on the engine. I need to beef it up, and would like to keep it with original transmission. I'm not too familiar with the Ford Bronco, but am a ford truck fan. I believe Ford makes the best truck on the market, and want to make my bronco better than it was before. I have a 90 Bronco, which soon after the transmission rebuild will need a new engine. I have plans for a crate 351, and a few extras.

I sold my 1991 SAE Bronco with 200K on the clock and it still had the original E4OD in it. Worked fine. However, expecting to get more than 200K out of any component of your Bronco, or any other vehicle, is a bit unrealistic.

FYI, the AOD is most closely related to the C4, not the C6.

I didn't say you COUDLN'T get more than 175K out of an E4OD I'm just saying its service record speaks for itself! On the whole the E4OD has had reliablility issues throughout its service life that show it more prone to failure than some of its counterparts. And Bimmerboy, if your "car" is a "Bimmer" I don't doubt for a second that its drivetrain will outlast ANYTHING else on the road. There is very little substitute for German engineering.

You can get some super heavy-duty E4OD's, but they cost as much as $5000.

Well I just oredered my rebuild kit. I'll take my time gathering the parts I want to put in it. I think I iwll do all the stuff they mentioned on that magazine article. This work should give me a good transmission. The nit's off top the engine. Then suspension. I'm looking forward to buying 6 heavy duty shocks $$$. On and by the way it is a 89 325i...It's my first love. I also love my bronco though too, and there is so much I can do with the bronco that I can't with my car. For instance my friend is rebuilding his 56 dodge, and he had his tires for it at the tire shop. The bronco held 6 tires with rims! Plus I think of the camping possibilities and also I have a jet ski so its good to take a bunch of friends in down to the beach. Overall I love my bronco and my car. Oh and btw I drove my car from houston, Texas to Halifax, Nova Scotia with only one problem. I popped a fuse for my tach...That was it. One of my friends is trying to convince me to put something other than sachs in for my clutch...not happening. I figure the sachs I have has lasted 300,000+ miles why not get another?

Mine is about to go over 185k, and while it's not as good when I got it (120k) I think it will reach 200k.

Well I went and bought a master rebuild kit. Hoping to get the transpak soon. Once I do that I need to get a new torque converter. Followed by various other parts. Then I will find a shop who can put it all together for me, and I'll be in business.

Also would a motorcycle/ATV jack be easiest to use to remove the transmission? I don't have a lift, but have plenty of jack stands, and several 3 ton jacks. I am going ot remove my transmission myself to save a little money.

You would probably be better off buying a trans jack. Mine came with a ratchet strap on it and only cost $70. The E40D is such a BIG trans you will probably have lots of trouble without a strap. I have also heard you can rent them, but I'm not sure where. Anyway, it was definitely worth the $70 to have an actual trans jack.
