Actually almost any carb has an adustable float it's just that the Holley can be done externally which is convenient if you have the need. Nothing wrong with the Holley at all. Either one will work well once set up properly. Some will swear by, or at, one or the other of them, but they are both good.
For your purpose they will both be fine. Most usually agree that the Holley will be the better flat out performance carb, if that's all your after, while the
Edelbrock is a little easier to tame for the street. Having said that there are tons of parts available to fine tune either of them if you are willing to take the time.
We need to back up a little. What do you have done to the engine and what exactly do you use it for? What size tires and gears does it have?
Hey, the truck currently has headers, holley 4 barrel intake, bigger air filter. I think thats really it.
I plan to do a few more small things such as double roller timing chain and set timing to straight up, I'd like to put a new cam but from the research it sounds like its hard to pick out one, flex lite fan, aftermarket coill and maybe some other stuff. Not sure what else I can really do that doesn't require a lot of dough.
The truck is currently on 33's. It has stock gears that I belive are 3.50's. I plan to put a little more lift and go to some 35's.
I'd just really like to get some more power out of this motor. I haven't been too impressed with it as of yet.
I'd like to order a new carb early next week so I'm open to suggestions.
Well the cam choice is not that hard for what you are doing. Your best bet would be the Comp cam 255deh. Unless the rest of the valvetrain is wheezed you should be able to get away with stock springs on it. Check with comp to be sure. The cam would be a much better investment than the fan assuming you have a stock fan and shroud that are in good shape. I would be careful about going to the 35's unless you really need them for the muddung you do. If it's just for fun I suppose you would be ok. I've only been in the mud once so can't give you specifics on gear tire combos. With either a stock cam or the comp cam mentioned I would not go over a 670 carb. You could probably get away eith a 670 but may have to lean it down a little. If you are getting in to rocks and hills though then you probably need the Holley made for that so that when you get on steep inclines or sideways you don't starve for fuel. Of course if you do that then you need some oiling system mods so you don't starve for oil...
So basically any carb within the 600 to 670 cfm range will do the job? I'm not too worried about it starving for fuel, I usually don't get too crazy on the rocks.
Will the 1406 be a step up from the carter? Or a step down? I'd really like to get more power of this motor. Next paid day I'm planning on getting a cam for it.
Wheres the best place to get a new cam? What about the springs?
As far as the carb goes it depends what Carter youi have. The Carter Profesionsal is basically an Edelbrock carb. As far as the cam Summit or Jegs have them or you may have a local shop you like. It's the Comp Dual energy 255deh.
I'm not too worried at part thottle as long as it will haul at WOT.
I've actually been thinking of a dffferent carb. The Holley Model 4160 Adjustable Float Carburetors Carburetor, Replacement, 600 cfm, Square Bore, 4-Barrel, Electric Choke, Single Inlet, Dichromate, Ford, Each
Anyone know how they do off-road? Any reviews period?
