do I have a clooged cat??

Great site. I just finished putting my crate I-6 in my 85 f-250.Got all the smog hoses put back on, dont have air conditioning, timed correct, runs smooth, but the exhaust pipe is cherry red at the back of the cat. This motor is carburated, no efi. Is the cat just clogged, or is there something else that I may have just missed. If the cat is clooged, would it hurt the running of the motor (given that all my pollution control is in place) if I just cut it off and went straight back and into the muffler?? I dont need to pass an emissions test, so I dont care about that, my only concern is with the engine.

P.S. I have been getting occasional chunks of black soot like material out the tailpipe, as well as black smoke.

It sounds like you have un-burned fuel getting to the cat where it is being burned, causing the red-hot exhaust. I would check the carb to be sure things are correct there. Stuck float or leaking needle&seat could be the cause. Good luck.

I have been told that you can tell if your Cat is clogged by the symptoms ur describing. And with soot coming out I would say it is, but I'm no expert. I have one emissions test left for my truck and I was thinking about cutting off my cat as well, but I haven't looked into after that. Maybe someone could shed some more light on these issues and help us both out. Anyone else cut their cat off?

no testing then just cut it off, it wont hurt anything it'll sure will be better for the engine then trying to breath through a pluged up cat

Ok, exhaust system was shot , so I cut it off right in front of the cat, but the cat was NOT clogged. I will have the exhaust system replaced by tomorrow. The unburned fuel was very evident when I was able to hear the backfiring. So I rebuilt the carb this evening, seemed to idle a little better. almost no backfiring. I also have another problem, but do not know if it is related. The truck will sit and idle fine, except for the backfiring, but will sputter horribly during acceleration, and remains this way. It runs like a turd. I did not have a fuel filter, but added one when the new motor went in. I then suspected the tank selector switch, but it checks out ok. I think I may have junk in the tanks. Will be checking that tomorrow.

get a vacuum gauge and follow the instructions on how to read it.

most manuals have a how to read a vacuum gauge.

it will tell you many things about your engine including if you have a clogged exhaust.

Glad your cat was saved. I had a clogged cat for a very long time, at least over a year. Didn't have a look at it but it was rattling like crazy, like at a stop light or carrying a heavy load of firewood, i think that finished it off. The rattling was eating away at the ceramic material in there. There was a definite loss of power, especially top end. It would ocassionally stall as well. I blew the radiator as well slow leak though. It may have overheated, i dont know the stock temp gauge rarely gets past the o in normal. so i got that replaced and one catalytic this time. Its alot noiser you really hear the exhaust now, more power, and better acceleration. I would like to take the damn thing off but i know the computer has a lot built around that. But it sure has cost me a few.

Ok, just to update, I finally traced the problem back to the eec. The iceing on the cake was after replacing the module and hall sensor in the distributer, I found the map sensor not working. I am only getting half a volt to the map sensor from the eec when I shound be getting 5. So the next step will to see where I can scrounge up a computer.
