gutting the muffler???

I have a 1990 f250 7.3 diesel and i was wondering if i get a cheap muffler and then cut it open and gut it how would it sound? Also would i get better fuel mileage? i dont want it too loud but loud enought to hear me coming a lil ways off. I live in North Carolina and you are required to run a muffler (For safety/emissions) so taking the muffler off wont be an option. Thanks for all of your openions.

if you do it run a pipe thought it, if you dont it will screw with your flow and you really wont gain anything. same applies when guttin a cat.

With that engine you can run a straight through muffler (Magnaflow etc.) and it shouldn't be terribly loud but people will hear you comming.

What kind of muffler is it? A turbo muffler or any straight through one will be good. 2" is way too small. you need 2.5" minimum(factory size).

Sounds like someone is trying to loose some friendly neighbors. My brother hollowed out his mufflers on his Chevy K-5 Blazer with a 350 and that thing was loud. I would drive it to the store and I got so many dirty looks but that was part of the fun.
