Is anyone going to let Ford mess with their trucks? I have heard too many horror stories here about reflashes ruining fuel economy. I have very good fuel economy now and from day one.
I'm thinking two things:
1) It ain't broke
2) My dealer can't service half of what they sell (not just the diesel portions)
I'll wait and see what else is said re: this recall.
If there is another thread on this, I would appreciate pointing me in that direction.
Yep, the conspiracy theorist are doing a good job on FMC over on the TDS board right now. I have always wondered about those whom believe that Ford execs set arround and discuss ways to screw thier customers. Is this something they learned at their own jobs? Maybe we need to have posters employment histories available so we can avoid doing business where these people work!
Thanks. I'll check out TDS. I know FTE presents only a VERY small sampling of what's happening in the 6.0 world. But, I don't know anyone else who owns one so I have to cruise the internet for data. It seems the consensus ONLINE is that reflashes ruin fuel economy. Mine is good. Barring some other problem, I cannot see risking it. Might as well trade for a gasser if my mileage goes south, especially now that diesel appears to be never going below gasoline again in price. I guess we'll see what summer brings this year--didn't happen last year, that much I know.
Hi, I'm a new guy on the block and just got my recall 06E17 and would like to hear or read more but don't know the other web site TDS. I agree if it's not broken, don't fix it. Can somebody help out with TDS?
Well.... just received my emissions recall letter in the mail this afternoon.
I have a 2003 Excursion 6.0L truck and the recall letter states that it is for 2003-2004 model years.
I called the number on the back of the letter and spoke to a very nice C/S person after he entered my info into his system.
Here are my concerns and here is what he told me:
My questions & his answers:
Q) My truck runs fine and no smoke or poor performance.
A) Glad to hear and this recall is not mandatory.
Q) I have read and heard of lower mpg fuel economy?
A) Yes, I/we have heard this too and there is no guarentee.
Q) Will not having this done effect my overall warranty?
A) No, this will not affect your warrenty and if a problem arises, you can have it fixed at that time.
Q) What if I choose not to have it done, will my dealer do it automaticly?
A) Not sure, but tell them up-front you know of the recall, but choose not to have it done as no problems exist... and tell them each time you visit.
Overall, the Ford C/S gentleman was great and said that since this is an emissions recall, it never expires and can be performed at anytime. He also said "if it's not broke, then don't worry about it and just keep it in your file."
When I mentioned that I had a prior flash to correct issues back in 2004, my mileage dropped and he agreed and had heard of this... but never heard of mileage increasing.
So, bottom line, hold on to letter and tell your dealer you do not want it for now and enjoy your truck (if it is running well). If you have problems that this emissions recall covers, then I would have it down. He said that emissions and safety recalls have no time period in which they expire.
Give them a call for yourself, but I was very glad to speak to someone that actually acknowledged my concerns and told me how to handle (or not to).
Mine has been acting up for a while. (surging, smoking, rough idle, etc.) Not all the time and not too bad, but enough for me to notice.
I got the letter today and will call dealership tomorrow to get it fixed. I'll post if have any negative side effects from update.
I agree with Beechbumcook. My service manager said that "if I'm not having any idling or drivability issues, he would just wait and keep the letter in the glove box". Since mines running good and has been for a while, I'm tempted to wait and see how others are doing with the recall. Personally, I would like to drop the EP sensor function. It's one less sensor to have a problem with. What do the experts think?
I too have recieved the recall on my 04 F250 CC. My gas mileage is pretty good, 16.5 city unloaded. I am experiencing a little of what Jeff said rough idle, smokes only when I jump on it (I hope this is normal) and a little surging .
Jeff - let me know how yours comes back....

i have the exact same thing on my 03 350 CC, rough idle sometimes, smokes only when i get on it hard, and a little surging only when stopped @ a light, not while accelerating or at steady speeds.. i have an appointment next tuesday w/ dealer for this 06E17, buddy of mine already had his 05 done.. said he noticed smother idle.. easier start up, and 2 more MPG... went from 17 hwy to 19 hwy... hand calculated.. same stretch of road.. same pump everything was the same.. but now gets 2 more mpg.. his.. 05 250 CC LB SRW
I'll post up what happends w/ mine w hen i get it back.. next tuesday the 21st..
SInce I do not sufffer like the rest of you (my time may come), I will wait and see what others have to say regarding fuel economy (if any change at all) over the next month or two.
Scheduled mine today. MPG decrease/increase, power increase/decrease...its a truck and will still be powerful. If it'll make the 6.0 last as long as I want, then I'm going for it. Plus, the dealer said I could keep the rental car through the transmission servicing that I wanted done as well.
