Filled up tonight for the third time since Sunday driving my 67 F100 to work every day. First tank 16.6mpg, Second tank 16.8mpg, Third tank tonight 17.0mpg. This new engine has about 1150 miles on it. This is driving the speed limit or less all over Dallas. Mostly freeway driving at 55. Tach says 2500rpm at 60 so I did the math. I have 3.50 gears instead of 3.25s like I thought I had. 28.5 in tall tires. Its actually 2475rpm at 60mph. Today's fillup was 290 miles, 16.6 gallons reg. unleaded. Whats going on here I thought 15 was the best I could hope for. I,m sure not complaining but I never heard of this. Any ideas?
well, if it isnt suitable for you ill be willing to take it off your hands .
you just got it dialed in right, and it will probably keep going up while it brakes in. what are the specs on the build?
76 F150 390fe, I posted my build specs in the thread smoked a chevy ss last night in this forum. This thing runs great and now its getting mileage. I dont know whats up here. This mileage was from very easy driving and not once punching it like I want to do so bad.
You can smoke a new Chevy SS, AND get great mileage! This is great. Gives us proof that it can be done, and that I wasn't blowing smoke with my previous mileage claims.
The all time record for my 390 was 17mpg, at 55mph, and that was with fuel injection!
Like was said, it will probably go up even more as the engine breaks in.
Now for kicks, go drive down to a Ford or Chevy dealer and look at what the new trucks get. Technology my ***.
Your right Rusty. And I know its not just one thing but rather a combination of all the things to get this kind of mileage. Had my mileage goal set at 15 in my mind if I was lucky so I dont even know what to say to this.
ok, now i really want to tear down my engine, wonder if my milage will suck becuase of the 801 cam? o well, im like you if i can get 15 ill be happy, becuase then i can get my dad to quit complainin about me havin a "big ol gas suckin V8" when his ranger with the 4.0 gets 14-16.
I have been averaging about 14 that is about 10 miles city and 8 miles freeway at 65 and even putting my foot in it every now and than.
My best recorded so far was 17.8 his was on a long trip straight road no hills 65 MPH and a nice cool day. That is a good improvement over the 8 and 9 I used to get.
I bumped the rear axel up to 3.00 just for the mileage. I have never intended to race this truck or beat it it is just for cruzing. But hey for a 352 thats not bad.
Well lets see thats a keg and 2 cases, I guess we could just ice the back end of the truck down to keep all that beer cold. I dont think Greg will get a lot of work done on his truck if we show up like this. Heck JD 17.8 is great. My 352 only got 10-12
i dont know guess it was just a pipe dream to want 18 mpg .. i figured my big old 88 burban could get it so could my truck ... lol
.. is the pertronix worth it .. ive seeen both praze and wrench throwing coments about it ... russ
I'm about 10 mpg with mine. I do have a heavy foot along with 4.10 gears and about 28" diameter tires. I haven't tried to tune it to get better. I kinda figured with 4.10 gears I wouldn't do much better.
