I need firing order help

I have a 88 Ford Bronco II 4X4 2.9 and m and a buddy finally got the broken spark plugs out of my head without having to take everything off. I put on new plugs, wires, dist. cap/rotary button and coil. All brand new parts. Well we got it all put back together and it fired right up and was idling really rough. The motor was shaking and it had a miss, then the engine just shut off and we have been unable to get any juice off of the coil since. I know its not my timing because none of that was moved during the installation of the new cap. My only guess why it was idling rough is because the firing order is all out of whack, and i have no idea what is wrong with the coil and why its not giving any spark. Are there knock sensors on this year/model vehicle? If so how do i reset it? I took the battery terminal off for like 30 minutes and we are still unable to get the motor running. Does anybody have any diagrams of the firing order for this motor and does anyone have any suggestions as to why i am not getting any spark?

I didn't see it either.

From Haynes:

yeah i just checked the firing order and thats exactly how i have it. So i dunno what is going on with it but this bronco has been nothing but a pain every since i bought it. Where is the knock sensor and can i just pull it out and see if the engine will run?

Firing order and diagrams...

You may also want to replace the ignition module in the distributor. If it goes out, you will get no spark. Not a cheap solution (module is $100-$150 new, requires special tool to remove/install), but, that sounds like the culprit. Check everything else thoroughly beforehand, though... so you can eliminate everything before forking over the $$$.

The module is $34 and all you need is a thin deep well 7/64 socket to pull it, no special tools needed.

I haven't looked... guessing the V-8 TFI module is more expensive (?) If not, then the last time I purchased one (for a '91 F150)... I got screwed. d'OH

Another thing to check is to ensure if indeed the coil is good Luckily, my '87 hasn't had any issues with the ignition... with exception to my installing the new plug wires out of order... which took all of a few minutes to fix.

well the timing and firing order is exactly where it needs to be and i took the other coil back and bought a new one. Still no fire from the coil. Would the ignition module keep the coil from firing? Is the ignition module located on the back or inside of the coil on the 2.9?

the ignition module is on the back side of the distributor itself, and has several wires going to it via a rectangular connector.

I think you missed the link in the tech info thread about trouble shooting the TFI ignition system.

ok i noticed the other day that when it rains, my heater box drips water. Drips water right over the passenger kick panel where the ecu is. Anybody know if this could be the culprit? Possible that the computer got wet and made everything messed up?

You might want to pull the kick panel and check everything and dry it out, then try... might have fried the computer, though -- have you tried pulling codes? If you get nothing... that might be the reason.
