You can run 31s, but, I broke/bent enough ears on the right side axle running P235s to skip the idea of bigger tires until I added a Dana 35. What I would do if you went bigger tires is go with dual shocks up front and full sized Bronco shocks in the rear. On the rear you just hog out the hole to 1/2" to run full sized shocks.
I have heard the same things some run 31's no problem and others start snaping the end of the u-joints on the axel.I run really aggresive 29'' and have good luck on the front end.
I have had my BFG AT ko's 235x75x15 (29")r's on for 20k miles with about half of that off road in some knarly terrain, and havn't broke an axle yet. Any bigger and you will probably have to back off the power a little.
been running 35x12.50x15 BFG M/T's on mine for 2yrs now and it is only used offroad on a regular basis..No problems..i run 4:10 gears. I'm easy on the pedal also.
