How to install keyless entry
How to install keyless entry
I just got a 2004 that does not have keyless entry and would like to install it. Not a keypad on the door but keyless entry with a FOB. I know there is a module I need to get from Ford. Does anyone know how to install it? Thanks
I would think that the keyless entry kit from Ford would have installation instructions included.
I doubt a Haynes manual will have the appropriate '04 wiring diagrams, and you really should have them on hand. To get wiring diagrams for your truck, you're going to have to either pick up a Ford CD/DVD manual off the internet (eBay or Helms.inc) or otherwise go to your local library and hope they have a Mitchells book or similar that covers the '04 Ranger.

I have installed keyless entry on my 04. I purchased the kit for less than $75 and it includes 2 remotes, alarm, shock sensor, controll module, door actuators, and a third channel for toneau or tool box. I think the kit was a stella/Autoloc and although alittle tricky to install due to vague directions, it has been in for over a year and works flawlessly. Should you decide on something like this kit I would be happy to help with installation pics and wiring....
I had someone put an alarm in my 99 Ranger with a pager, but I wired up PDL. The alarm (Omega Max-E with an Echo 2 Pager) ran me ab $420 installed. The guy was trying to tell me that it would cost me $75 per door for the locks. I politely told him that I would manage on my own. Who doesn't know how to run relays? My goodness!!! This is an incredible alarm, I'm not entirely stupid, it's wired to my factory horn, flashes my DRL, and pages me when it goes off. That may seem a little steep, but I wanted it done right and I've never done an alarm before.

It has been a while but I seem to remember that there are a couple of connections to be made to the same point from the module to the parking lights. One of them has a diode(s), orange I think. Anyway the unlock feature flashes the lights four times, once with the unlock feature. It took me some time to figure this out as well.
Go buy a good aftermarket alarm, like a Viper, or anything made by DEI (vipers parent company) and you can put in door loke actuators that will lock and the doors when you arm and disarm, also when you turn the key off and on, if you want. The alarm will also turn on your domelight when you disarm it, among other options you can select. It's a difficult install, you can do it for yourself for under $250, or probably $400 to have it done. I would normally say cheaper, but they charge extra to put in the door lock actuators. This is the set up on my truck, and it works great.
Thanks for the input, I finally figured it out once I got the wiring information from the manufacture. There is a brown wire that goes to the parking light/headlight switch for the parking lamps. After wiring to it, everything worked fine.
This was just a keyless entry kit for about $45 shipped. Installing the door actuators on a Ranger is very simple. Wiring was a bit more difficult with vague instructions. An alarm would be nice, but not entirely necessary.

Yeah, the first time i had to hook up relays for door locks, i had to talk to a buddy of mine at a car stereo shop. You have to daisy chain 4 terminals to hot all the time, 2 terminals ground all the time, and the other 2 terminals are for the reversing polarity trigger wires, it's pretty tricky.
