I went and test drove an 06 exploder saturday with the4.0, an auto of course. It did pull harder than my 04 ranger, my ranger is a 4x4, with a 4.0, 5-speed, and 410 gears. You could realy feel the torque in the lower gears with overdrive off. If I could match that same performance in my lighter ranger, it would be a worthwild upgrade. If you guys can, go test drive a 4.0 exploder, and you'll see what I mean, just make sure you turn the overdrive off for the best results. It's not just the 06, my tech say's the Ex has had higher torque numbers for several years now. So finding a wrecked one in the bone yard might not be to hard, and just ****** the intake, get it tuned. Thats 16 more foot pounds,+ 3 more hp, not a bad upgrade!
This is quite strange. What I would like more than anything is to just prove why they would give it more torque. Makes little sense. Wendell, if you talk to those techs anytime soon, ask them if they know what year it started.
Ranger Pilot, they said it's because the EX weighs more, and more people use explorers to pull campers, boats, and the like, verse's the ranger. Since at least 2000 model year, maybe longer, wasn't sure, he's gonna look it up for me.
I looked up the price of an 04 explorer, 4.0 intake on direct ford parts.com, and it was 233.31$, not a bad price. I used 04, because thats what year my ranger is.
It is for sure a sohc thing, we just need to nail down if it is all EX with 4.0 sohc, or if it started in 02 ( as i believe ) when they inlarged the explorer. My tech thought at least 2000, but wasn't sure without looking it up.
The SOHC version is the last Cologne engine still in production, though it will be phased out in 2007 in favor of the new Cyclone.
OK, so who's going to bring us up to snuff on the "Cyclone"? Anyone know anything about this new Cologne engine? Specs? Dates? Applications?
EDIT: Never mind. The Cylcone is the 3.5L Duratec. The funny thing is, I haven't heard of any plans by Ford to replace the 4.0 SOHC with the Duratec 35. So I'm not sure about the source of that information...

The 3.5 is a dohc, most all dohc engines make there hp and torque in the upper rpm range, ok for cars, not so great for trucks, where low end torque is desired. I supose ford could do some work with cams, and tune to try and give the 3.5 some lowend grunt. I bet they stick with the 4.0 in the ranger, if they get 16 ft pounds, and 3 hp with the intake, what would a 3 valve head with varible timming do? 250, or 260 hp I bet. They've yet to reach the full potental of the 4.0. The mustang may be a better canidate for the 3.5, but it will knock us 4.0 folks out of future aftermarket stuff, that is sure to come along for the mustang.
I do believe it was said the that the 3.5L DOHC would be introduced in 2007 and would run in many of their vehicles. It would be more cost effective to run one V6 engine rather than 3 different V6s.... (Vulcan, Cologne, and Duratec?!?) That'd be a mechanics nightmare having to know that many motors inside and out. I'm in favor of keeping the 4.0 but it seems as if it will be replaced.
I heard though some sources, that they will build the current ranger through the end of the decade, their still deciding if they want to redesign the ranger, or build a new truck from the ground up.
