The heater defaualts to defrost. I checked all vacuum lines, canister, and replaced vacuum relays. There is no sign of vacuum leaks. Any ideas as to what to check next? The engine runs smooth. Could it be in the switch on the dash for 4x4? Seems that when the switch is turned the heater works fine for about two minutes.
Any ideas on this would be greatly apprecited.
Thanks
P.S. Sorry for posting in the wrong spot last time. I'm really new to this "forum" thing.
Sounds like the cable or the door in the unit which adjusts the flow is broken. Do you mean it just stays on defrost no matter where the selector is set (FLR, PNL, etc.)?
The selctor could be anywhere, floor pannel etc and it will switch defrost when I accelerate. It will switch back when I put the truck into 4 wheel drive and pops back to defrost after about a minute and a half - 2 minutes. Seems problem might be electrical??
Since you've ruled out vacuum leaks, the reason the system is switching to defrost when you accelerate (results in numerically low manifold vacuum) is because the check valve has failed. Forget the cables as a year 2000 model has none.

it seems that you may be on to something. I don't see a check valve in the lines anywhere. could it be that it is in the vacuum reservoir tank? I hope not because it is in between the fender walls. What a place to put it. I think I will order a new one and try it before i tear the inside fender well out. Thank You for the great idea. I will start there. Bilco.

The check valve is in the reservoir. You can try putting another check valve in-line from the reservoir to the HVAC supply instead of replacing the reservoir.
FWIW, someone recently had a similar problem and it turned out to be the PVH solenoid was leaking.
