Thanks for the pointer. It told me my truck has a 2.75 Ford rear. I also found out it was originally a 4 spd manual but was converted to C6 before I got it. I kinda wish it still had the 4 speed in it. Oh well, some time this summer it will get the AOD. The rear has also been replaced with a Dana 40 or 44 with 2.75 gear by one of the 8 previous owners.
You are going to put an AOD with a 2.75 rear? I wonder if you
will be able to ever use the overdrive? On the interstate maybe?
Well, I think some mustangs had this combo, but they are not very
heavy vehicles.
The 79 is probably getting the 8.8" rear from the 87 and the 87 will probably get the 2.75 9" from my 78 parts truck. I still need to find out what ratio is in the 8.8 (yes I do know how) and maybe switch to 3.55 gears. Then the AOD will be justified.
I wish I knew what the hell the "J" stands for, I have the same code on my door jamb, and the rear tag says 2.75, but in my ford shop manuals for that year say nothing of a "J" it does have the 13 though...
LAST EDITED ON 06-Mar-01 AT 04:35 AM (EST)[p]loudfords, you might want to rethink the rear end swap into your 87! It has rear antilock brakes, and the sensor is mounted in the top of the rear end. The 8.8 has an exciter ring inside that sends the signal to the ABS computer. The 9 inch you are talking about swapping in does not have any kind of provision for the abs sensor in the top of the axle housing. I figured this out when a buddy of mine offered me an 8.8 out of an 83 model. It doesn't have the provision for the abs sensor either. A simple way would just be to find a good set of gears and install them instead. It would save loads of headaches. Plus I think 87's and 79's used different width springs didn't they?

My truck has the 13J for an axle code even though its 2wd and has been all its life so I don't think J means front axle.
hotrod: Yes I know about the ABS in the 8.8 axle and that is one of the reasons I want to do the swap. That ABS has been nothing but a PITA. My 87 is a winter beater and as soon as you get on anything slippery the fronts lock up and you can't steer but because of the ABS the rears still push you around until you put it in neutral. I know the ABS is good on dry summer roads but thats not what I use the truck for. The ABS is all FUBAR anyways ever since I took the truck to the dragstrip and did burnouts with it. The ABS light comes on all the time now. I tried pulling the fuse to defeat the ABS but that made the problem worse than ever, no back brakes. Oh well, I guess I'll take it to the dragstrip on opening night again this year and thrash it
