I have a '79 f-150, does any body know how big of a tire you can put on with out a lift, it's obvious i will need off set rims, but i would like to put 38" thornbirds this summer, but if they won't fit i have to put on 35"s, or buy a 3inch body lift, but hey it's all a big dent in my wallet.
thanx
I have a 91 F150 and I went from the stock LT/235/75R15 to LT/285/75R16 and it fit just fine without a lift, I don't know if this helps you or not. I think these are equivelent to a 33 inch tire.
i had a 79 ford it had a 6" lift and a 3" body lift.I ran 40" gumbo monster mudders on 10" steel wheels.i could run 44" but really needed finder triming.without a lift i bet 31 or 32 max and that would be close.good luck
If you don't do the lift...I've got 31's on my stock 15" rims. There's no problem on a '79 F-100. Handles well. Any bigger and you might lose turning radius clearance.
I put 33's on last spring, mounted on Weld aluminum 15X10 wheels with stock backspacing and NO LIFT. The tires stuck out the side too much so I had to put fender flares on to save my paint. I have had no problems with them. If your not doing any rock crawling they work. The only other mod I did was spacing down the bumpstop so the tires wouldn't come up into the fenders under a heavy load. I used a 3x4 piece of steel tubing and bolted it in place of the rubber stop (which was gone on mine anyway).
Dave,
79 F-150 4x4, 390 w/C6, Edelbrock carb, 33X12.50 never will be finished.
I have a 79 with no lift (that I know of) and the 32's fit real nice. My friend has a 76 with a 4 inch susp. lift and 35's on it, but they will rub on the fenders in tight turns.
