Oil in Coolant

Checked my anti-freeze and found what I believe is the slightest amount of what looks like oil in the antifreeze. Could this be caused by a faulty oil cooler/rad? I've read posts about some big "o-rings" needing to be changed? What else could it be? The truck runs alright otherwise....

Depending on the color of the oil..........red trans cooler in the base of the rad may be the problem. Black color would be the cooler orings........did you have any work done on the cooling system lately. Some shops use fairly dirty collection pans and introduce oil into the coolant.

Check the trans for A/F if there was a recent need to add any or check under the engine oil filler for scum that tastes sweet..........ptoowy

I just got the van, but I doubt anything had been serviced recently. From what I could see in the relative dark, it looked like engine oil...these o-rings, where exactly are they located, and are the difficult to change?

Thanks,
Jer

the cooler is on the driver side of the engine front, up under the head. the o rings are internal to the front and rear header assemblies and seal the tube against the headers. Requires draining the coolant and the block or ya get a bath. the front header only hooks the cooler to the block and the rear header is the oil filter mount. Probably harder to get apart than put together after cleaning and lubing the o rings once they are replaced. you can use emery cloth to clean the surfaces and o ring lube or stp to lube them when putting together. You could prob do it by removing only one header, in your case i dont know which is easier. The headers also have gaskets to seal against the block.
