Hub problem?
My 01 Excursion is starting to get a bad repetitive vibration. So bad it tickles your foot on the floor. Feels like it's coming from the drivers side front. Tires seem fine and no vibration in the wheel. I think it's a hub or bearing. How hard to replace this?

Just did mine, wasn't too awful. I didn't have any vibration though, but at the top of the wheel it had about 1/4" of movement that shouldn't be there. There was a tech article I saw somewhere but I can't find it now.

Havent had any problems with mine yet, but I here its a expencive fix to redo the stock hubs. Just installed 37'' tires so Im going to up grade to dynatrac's free spin kit before the stock hubs leave me stranded. Free spin kit= new hubs spindles 35 spline outer shaft servicable inner and outer timken wheel bearings. Going to do the install this weekend.

As far as the stock hubs, one of my buddies just replaced a hub assembly on his F250. He said you remove the 4 bolts behind the hub assembly and I think he said something about a snap ring and the assembly comes off. He said if he had to do it again he could do the whole job in about 45 minutes. A dealer will charge you over $700 (parts+labor).

To fix his problem, he's going to have to replace the entire hub assembly, not just the mechanism that locks the hubs. The instructions with the link are good because they show how to get to the snap ring that you have to remove. After that, you'll have to remove the 4 bolts behind the assembly and the whole piece (hub, bearings, everything) should slide off. Should be an easy job. If I were doing it, I'd go with the Dynatrac system that 4x4 Vanman's installing instead of replacing it with the Ford assembly. That gives you a better design and the ability to service the bearings without replacing the entire hub assembly - much cheaper maintenance over the life of the truck.

Hokie's right. I found removing the studs from the hub assembly a PITA once it was off the truck. LockTite on the studs. I would have liked to of used the Dynatrac but couldn't cough up the extra 1200 dollars to get back on the road.

I purchased the extended warranty on the truck. Going to see if its covered. My warehouse carries hubs but we don't list the ones for my truck. Getting ready to lift and throw 37s on it so I need to get this fixed.
