Swing away Mirrors

Here's something I hope somebody here can help me out with. I have cheap and I mean very cheap aftermarket doors on my 78 Ranger that I would like to get rid of for some good used factory doors due to the fact that I don't think I can find them new anymore. This is the problem though. My swing away mirrors are just screwed into the doors with sheet metal screws and I know they are not in the right location because the bottom bracket is screwed right into the center of the bodyline. I have seen numbers of trucks with the bottom bracket bolted slightly above the bodyline and am under the impression that that is the correct mounting location. Vertically at least. My question is how are these mirrors actually bolted on. Is there a bracket inside the doors like the newer trucks, (I know rangers and BII's have them for sure.) or some other way. Thanks for any info.

Hi, 150s and up use a crush nut you drill the hole insert the nut and then put a bolt in and tighten it till the nut crushes this locks it into the door and when you remove the bolt you have threads that stay in place in the door. John

And if the nut come out of the door, a plastic insert fits in fine, They gave me a set with my new mirrors.

I am betting that if you have anything to say about this, the chances are that your used doors are going to have a nice set of mirrors on them, or, at the very least, the mounting holes. :-)

LAST EDITED ON 15-Mar-01 AT 08:22 PM (EST)[p]Thanks guys. I have lots of mirrors but I am hoping to find a set of doors with the factory mounting holes. My passenger door has square expandable inserts in it. I just do not think they are in the right place. I think that door might actually be factory due to it weighs twice as much and does seem to be thicker steel then the other. Is there a way that I can tell? I hav not really looked for any kind of stampings inside or outside of the door.
