exhaust experiment
Well boredom got the best of me today. I decided to see what my truck sounds like with no muffler. The clamps on the 05 are the band type not the U-bolt type. I loosened the bolt and the joint was loose. I shoved the muffler with my foot and it slid off the pipe. Never had one come off so easy. The muffler pipe was along side the exhaust pipe so there was no blockage of the pipe. The hangers held the muffler/tailpipe and the rest of the exhaust system so I decided to fire her up. It sounded just like my 4.3L Mercruiser I/O when out of the water! When I reved it up it got louder and lost it's rumble but it wasn't too ricer sounding. Of course I had to drive around the block. It is loud for sure. It did seem to settle down at a cruise rpm and even at wot it didn't seem as loud as at lower rpms. My son wants me to leave it like that... I don't think so.... I have a Dynomax Super Turbo sitting in the garage to try but it wouldn't fit right now with the stock muffler still in place. I'll try the muffler one of these days. I did take a 16 second Quick Time video clip of starting the truck and a quick rev. It's 3.2mb. I don't have any place to post it.

the twin cats up front took some of the sound away to get waht you have try droping the pipes off the manifolds o-boy. but if you do take you have to clear the faults from the o2s's not senseing flow.

I also did this same test however I removed the stock muffler. I ran a 3" gas stove elbow (cheap!!) for a few days,it was loud but on deceleration it would pop almost like a backfire. I installed a fm40 on the pipe after a few day because it was what I had on my '02 and it sounded good.
However on my'05 flatbed all I could hear at around 2000 rpms was an awful drone in the cab.It was also there when I had no muffler.So I ordered a fm70 figuring this would solve the problem. It didn't. I will say the drone is a little quieter but it will still rattle my eardrums.I don't know if the exaust note echo's off the body or what.I have a tailpipe installed exiting in the stock location.I would like to find a mufler that sounds as good as the fm70 but does not echo in the cab at 2000 rpm.As a whole through out the rest of the rpm the fm is a head turner,especially near the rev limiter at wot!
As a comparisin the drone sounds like some one blowing across the top of an empty bottle. If it comes to it I may even put the factory muffler back on after 9 months of collecting dust.
