Broken key on the ignition

Well... that happened last week, serves me right, that´s what happens when you lend your truck to someone else (please read: my brother)... lol ... Actually i don´t think it was his fault, but now i have this situation to solve... i have some ideas but i wanted to hear yours, any comments?.

P.S.: Wondering how my "key" looks now? check my gallery "miscelaneas"

How did that happen? Dosent the switch itself kind of envelope the key? I would probably find myself a locksmith to get it out, or get a thin piece of metal and try to kind of work it out.

My brother tells me it happened when he was pulling out the key, my father was with him and confirmed it so i´m sure it´s no lie, probably it was just a weak key.

It's down in there huh? Can you start the truck the way it is? If so maybe just leave the key in there - add a hidden kill switch somewhere to foil the bad guys. Maybe some super glue or a tiny dot of two-part epoxy on the part that you hold on to just to pull out the other part. Or drill a tiny hole in the part that's still in the ignition to thread a thin screw into. Either way be very careful not to get glue or drill waste stuck in the ingnition key hole.

a locksmith should have a tool made for removing broken keys from the cylinder. it is a very thin strong wire that gets behind the key piece, then you just pull it out.

That happened to me too. I pulled into the driveway and the dang keyring just dropped to the floor. So, I pulled the lock cylinder out and was able to get the key out with a tweezers.

I´m not that lazy to just let that key inside... bus it does work, i´ve been using the truck like that since last thursday, i also thought about super glue, it might just work

That´s another option i considered... keep the good ideas guys, i will be trying the glue today or tomorrow, if not, i´ll take out the cylinder, but i won´t pay a locksmith! . Come to think ot it... maybe the key broke because it holds all the weight of the keyring when it´s in the ignition, so it was kind of our fault, wasn´t it?.

FWIW: More then one ignition switch has failed from a big heavy key ring hanging off it. I guess your key failed instead, from metal stress, sort of like bending a coat hanger back and forth many times.

Replacing an ignition switch in a Ranger is pretty easy if you already have the key, all you would have to do is push the key in gradually until you could turn it to the on position.

Gee Encho, I wasn't thinkin lazy! I might like to have keyless ignition myself. Keys would no longer swing wild from the steering column, I wouldn't have to run upstairs for my keys every time I need to move vehicles around in the driveway, less keys on my keyring, no more $30 replacement keys ('06 has passive antitheft system with a chip in the key handle), etc, etc.

I bet it's not just the weight but also that you drive off road too so those keys are jumping all over PLUS, your key is cut with that narrow spot where it broke off - a different keying would be stronger.

I have a pair of needle nosed pliers made for electrical work; the tip is ultra thin. Get your hands on a pair of these and just reach in there, grab and pull it out.

small thin needle nose or a couple of picks (use them like chop sticks). If that doesn't work, drive the truck to a lock smith and he'll be able to pull it out and make you a key if needed.

Don't use the glue. It will be hard to make it work and you risk gluing your lock cylinder. Take the lock cylinder out, and you should be able to knock the key out by pounding on the bench or picking at it with a small paperclip or tweezers

do NOT use glue, or epoxy...

Drive to a lock smith, and have them pull it out. If you get glue in it, it will not work ever again.

I think they use a small, flat titanium rod with a short 90 on the end to pull it out... if your bored you could try to make one, but again, taking it to a locksmith would be the easiest thing to do

Just dont use glue or anything sticky if you DIY

I tried the glue, but don´t worry, i didn´t even use a drop, i moistured the tip of the broken piece out and then tried to hold them together... it didn´t work, but it didn´t hurt anything either, i´ll try something thing, paperclip, picks or whatever, if not, then i´ll take out the cylinder.
