ak the whitewall conversion was so easy all you need is liitle time maybe 1 hr per tire at the most.the tires i had were from discount tire with a 1/2 whitewall.Just used a grinder with a 120 grit flap disc and started grinding around the whitewall. there is white under the black.you can try this on a old tire:raised letters in white or whitewall.just do it in one place first. i'll post some pics this weekend.you will be surprized with the results
Just wondering how that changes the integrity of the "side wall" of your tire? How much rubber is being removed to access the white rubber? Would sure hate to be going down the road and find out that that wasn't such a good idea? I really want to see this in it's finished state all cleaned up ... cause it does look cool. Maybe paint the rim up a little and get a chrome cap look nice. Now lets see the rest of the truck.
Awesome I love this site. I actually spray painted my sidewall. Before you say anything negative please check out my gallery. I like the way it looks and it was only 88 cents for the paint. Look at my gallery under Pic of my whitewall. Leave a comment if you want I love to hear them. Sorry to hijack your thread low ford. Your truck is gonna be sweet. John
Man does that bring back memories. I remember painting whitewalls about 40 years ago on some old junkers I owned. The problem as I remember was with the paint cracking and wearing off. Otherwise, it looked pretty good at 100 feet.
On any whitewall or white letter there is a fairly wide strip of white rubber under the black sidewall. The black rubber actually has to be ground down after moulding to expose the white rubber. Widening whites is popular in this area for lowriders, and many lowrider shops use a whitewall cutter from an old recap shop, kind of like a lathe for tires. As long as you stop cutting when you reach the end of the white rubber and don't continue into the relatively thin black sidewall, you're safe. Just go slow. BTW, rubber tires used to be all white. Pure rubber is white, but it's not very durable. After the discovery that adding carbon black to the rubber made it more durable, but changed the color to black, tire makers invented the white wall in an attempt to keep tires looking the proper color, white, at least from the side.
