I have a 1966 Ford F100 that I am in the middle of pro streeting at the moment. I am going to be putting on a Fat Man's MII front end soon with manual steering and power brakes and going to move the leaf springs inside the frame rails to fit 16.5 Mickey Thompson tires in the rear (can't afford ladder bars at the moment). I need all new glass and rubber seals, etc in this truck and thought about chopping the top before putting it all in and before painting the truck. Right now it's painted in a dark metallic forest green with pearl so in the sun you can see just a tad bit of blue in it. Any idea's here on what to do about the chop? Has anyone here done this to a similar year Ford? The welding part is not a problem for me, I went/going to college for a welding degree and have been welding for a few years now, body work and paint is not a problem either since it's what I do for a living. I have heard half the people say its very hard to chop a top on this year truck and the other half say it's not hard just time consuming. My biggest problem is keeping the front windshield angle and shape the SAME but just lower so someone can cut the glass that I buy for a 66 F100. Any idea's, photos, etc would be greatly appreciated! I saw a metallic orangish red F100 like mine pro streeted with a 4" chop and it's exactly what I want to do. It was in a classic truck magazine or custom classic trucks (can't remember).
Thanks a lot for any help guys!
Subscribe to 'Classic Trucks Magazine' and recall reading fairly informative 2 or 3 part article on chopping an F100. Thought it was a 66 F100, but in browsing magazines web site, under past issues, found an article on chopping a 64 F100. It is in the Dec. 2003, and following 1 or 2 issues. Not sure if magazine sells past issues. If interested and willing to wait, I should be returning home within next couple of weeks, if I kept the issues, you can have them.
Heck that would be GREAT!!! I didn't know they did an issue on that. Please let me know when you can send them and I will send my contact info, etc at that time. Oh and yes that link is to the truck I like. I want a 3 or 3 1/2 inch top because I don't want the chop to be really noticable, just mild. I do like the cowl hood as well.
check out www.ididit.com they have an article on the site about a guy that chopped his 65 and did a whole lot of other stuff. its pretty sweet.hope it helps
Sorry I am late here but I don't get Email notifications from this site for some odd reason. Anyways, thanks for the link. I like the truck besides the vette looking tail lights but the chop looks nice. I'd rather do 3 or 3 1/2 inches because a 4 is a tad too much IMO. Any idea how I can contact this customer with the truck to get some info? My biggest fear of doing this chop is finding someone locally that will cut the glass and also me keeping the shape of the windows to where I only have to cut some of the glass from a regular stock windshield.
