Neither one. I would take the Sterling if I needed the VSS, and if not I would take the 14 Bolt Chevy axle.
The 9" is a good axle for a racecar, and it will work fine in a half ton street truck, but I would want something with a higher torque and weight capacity on anything else
That's a pretty vague poll seeing as there's a lot of options for Dana axles and a lot of different rigs you could be putting them in.
9" rears are a lot tougher than most people give them credit for. If you don't think so do some searching for videos posted by monsterbaby. He's beating on his with 39" tires and almost 900hp. He finally upgraded shafts as a safety precaution but he's been running stock shafts in that truck for a couple years with no problems.
IMO the D60 rears are a pretty weak axle without some serious shaft upgrades. I'd go with a D70 rear over the rest any day. Sterlings are pretty bullet proof axles as well, they just have some odd little quirks if you have a decent amount of power that I didn't want to chance in my truck. I see a lot of guys swap 14 bolts into their trucks which is fine if it's staying on the street. If the truck sees much offroad it's a real knuckle dragger and will dig trenches everywhere you go unless it's heavily clearanced.
Still too vague. What truck, what size tires, how much horsepower, what's the anticipated gearing, how much "speed", offroad mud or trails or rocks or what? There's a lot of factors to consider here and you're not giving us near enough information to help you.
a 1976 Ford f100 with a 300, I am looking for something that will do good offroad, I have 30" tires on it. It has a 3 speed tranny and it seems with the gearing it seems to max out, I was talking and It was suggested to et something with different gearing like a dana.
You'd be best to just regear your current axle. With those tires and what you're doing the 9" will hold up just fine. Even swapping a Dana axle in there's a good chance you'd need to regear. Do you know what the current ratio is? When you say the gearing is maxed out do you mean it lugs down or that it wraps out with high RPM on the highway?
