I'm looking to purchase a '78 or '79 F-250. The owner died in January and her kids say that it has the 460 ci in it. I don't really want to take their word for it.
What is an easy way to identify the engine that's in this truck?
8 bolts on the valve covers, and thermostat housing on the intake manifold are too easy give aways. But the Windser motors also have the thermostat housing on the intake but the size difference should be obvious for that plus they don't hve 8 bolt valve covers.
Take a peek under the coil hold-down clamp. Unless someone removed it there should be a small metal tag there. The first number stamped on it is the displacement.
If you are lucky, there may be an engine tag that's till readable enough to see the displacement. It will be stuck somewhere on the top of the radiator core support, or possibly even the top of the valve cover.
My 460 doesnt have 8 bolts it only has 7 for the valve covers.?????
my bad your right I must have been half asleep when I wrote that, ok don't listen to me.<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxdm824BXUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_18_5.gif' alt='Bag Head' border=0></a>
You better look again I bet you wil find that that 8 is actually a 3 there is no such thing as a D8VE head casting. I might make mistakes once in awhile but that one i don't make a mistake on.
Also, look at the thermostat housing.
460 thermostat (not the housing) lies parallel to the ground.
351W and the 302 (I think) thermostats are perpendicular to the ground.
What about the 351M/400 thermostats' postitions? Can anyone tell me?
Sounds easy then. Thermostat locations are as follows:
FE (332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428): Perpendicular, mounted on the intake (also intake is partially covered by valve cover, as it forms part of valve cavity under the valve cover)
Windsor: Perpendicular (and mounted on the block, I am pretty sure).
351M/400 (And 351C?): Parallel, mounted on block.
385 series (429/460): Parallel, but mounted on intake.
