Glad I could help. Say, how close is Bloomington to Duluth? My family is from there. "Shaw" is our name...

Mr. MonsterBaby has a point. The head casting numbers for Ford/Lincoln/Mercury look like this:

First number = Decade of production

"D" = 1970 to 1979

Second number = Year of production

"3" = 1973

There was no "4", "5", "6", "7", so there can't be an "8".

Third number = Model

"A" = Ford

"V" = Lincoln

"T" = Truck

Forth number = Engineering group

"E" = Engine

Hope this clears things up...

actually that casting number idea doesn't work, the block, and head casting numbers on these engines is actually a casting revision number not a date casting number (that can be found in another place) The D3VE casting number was the revision to the heads that was made in 1973 and that casting was used clear up into the 80s with the advent of fuel injection although there does appear to actually be a few E5 and E6 castings.
Another example of this is the blocks in 1971 they revised them for slightly taller deck hieght and that revision number is D1VE, there might be a suffix after that also such as A2B that indicates a further minor revision. the casting date on the block is in thelifter gallery. The next revision was D9TE, which was in 1979 as you would guess and that casting number was used on all blocks up until the end of the 460s in 1997.

If stock valve covers, I have found that the easiest and most stand outish sign of a 460 is the valve covers. They were the same for the 429's and 460's for most all of the early years, and in a 78/79 truck, I would say it is a relatively early engine. The valve covers were kind of squared off, and flat on top. Once you see one, you'll know the look.
BTW, even if the truck you're looking at has a 429, you'll be happy with it. 429/460 engines are both a very good choice for that truck, IMO.
It probably is an engine swap out of a Lincoln. Mine is and runs like a stripe azz't ape.
