Flooded Engine

I was just wondering what is the best way to "unflood" and engine. I just rebuilt my engine but my parents made me move my truck from the shed to the outside cause they wanted to clean out the shed. Of course it rained like a bitch all week and then when I went to fire it up on saturday the cylinders and the intake were completely filled with water it wouldn't even turn over. I covered the engine up with a tarp but I guess water leaked through my air filter through my carb and through my intake. Anyways. I took the plugs out and the spark plugs and turned it over and flushed most of the water out. I did it again today and no water was in it, so I sprayed some WD 40 in the cylinders to prevent it from rusting and put the plugs back in. Would this work and what else should I do to get the engine prepped for starting. It hasn't Run since Dec 31 2000, new rings, piston, con rod bearings, seals and gaskets.

Thnx , Gord

I would leave the plugs out for a while to let any moisture evaporate. the WD40 is a good idea. Then change the oil before starting. I would then change it again after a short run.

there is a product called "WIRE-DRYER" it is used for wet electrical components like distributors etc, it evaporates quickly taking the water with it.it also dries clean with NO residue. shoot a little in each cylinder then re-oil them untill starting

if it was me I would take all the plugs out and turn the motor by hand a couple times to get the as much water out as possible then spray it down with some type of lube and crank it over. The same thing happened to me except I tried to jump a stock dam and ended up in the middle with water up to about the middle of my doors....ah the joys of youth. Anyway after we pulled it back home I did that then changed oil a couple times and shes still running.

K thanks guys. I need some more info on this though. I just put my intake back on today after cranking it over a couple times. I put my intake and carb back on, pumped the gas a couple times and turned it over, not even a cough. I took one plug out and shot some gas into the cylinder, put the plug back in and turned it over. It back fired, probably the loudest backfire I've ever heard. I know I have to re-time it, but do you have any tips on timing and how I should tune it up? I also changed the oil too it was ##### gross, white as my #####. So what should I do ?

ok, I finally found out why my truck wouldn't fire, my valve timing was out about 9o degrees, so I tore my water pump off and my rad and took the timing apart and found out the vqalve timing was out almost 90 degrees. it almost started yesterday after we fixed the timing AND it started at ran for about 5-7 seconds. What's wrong with it?
