Elec Fan Push Or Pull?

Havejust installed a new crossflow aluminum radiator with a 16" elec fan. Clearance problems will only allow me to install it as a pusher. Can anyone tell me any temp variances between a pusher or puller install? don't have her back on the road yet nor do I have a temp gauge, yet, will soon though. See my gallery named Portell.

Joe -

That is a beautiful install.

Pusher or puller really doesn't matter. I have heard that pulling is a bit more efficient, but if the fan cfm is sufficient, it shouldn't matter.

I know you are concerned that you have enough cooling down there in Florida, but it looks to me like you've got a handle on it with that setup.

thanks Randy,

did not want to send the Griffin back but they couldn't get the leak fixed in two attempts so I said hell with it and ordered another which should work as well. Getting ready to do a front and rear brake job and reinstall the new rear end (300 gear)this week. Hopefully she wll be on the road soon.....not soon enough.

Looks very nice! Never heard of Portell radiators, how do they compare cost wise with the Griffin?

was $50 cheaper but the Portell is a crossflow and did include a full elec fan cowling that I had to unfortunately chop up when I moved the fan to the front. The base price for that radiator $425 (Griffin $500)my total was $565 to the door in Orlando from Missouri, that's cowling plus shipping. The Portell is nicely put together and polishes up really easy. It was packaged like a coffin with all the reciepts and flyers from the company which the other did not. I did not have a good experience with Griffin who still has over $100 of mine for return shipping which I probably will never see. Speak to Gary Portell, very helpful and keeps his promise on schedule and cost.

Thanks Joe. Hopefully, I'll be looking for a radiator for my 56 project in the near future but right now things are progressing slowly and still on the chassis. Where in Missouri is Portell. I'm near Kansas City.

You said that you had to chop up the fan cowling. Did you have to remove a corner or the like to get to fit in front? If so, did you fill the void so that the fan pushes the air through the rad fins and not out the hole? Just wondering Jag

The way the radiator is built the cowling screws in the top and bottom of the cross bar on the radiator so it made it very easy to filp it to the front side. Then I reversed the blade on the fan so it would push instead of pull, spoke with Gary first and asked if he thought it would be a problem or much less efficient and he said not enough to worry about. All I did was remove the excess cowl wherever I could to expose as much core as possible to increase airflow across the radiator core from the front. I guess the cowl when used as designed as a puller is supposed to limit the amount of visible core to force air through the cowl opening, as a puller. I really just modified the cowl to become a elec fan mounting bracket from the front. Which is a shame because it would have looked sharp from the engine side solid aluminum with just the fan exposed.

You really shouldn't have any temperature differences. According to Permacool, pusher fans are only about 80% efficient when comparing the same rated fan that is a puller. You shouldn't have radiator cooling problems, but the fan may run more often in this setup, IMO.

since it has been installed it would be tough to get a shot that would show anything. the portell web has some shots on the 57 chevy site that shows the cowl and the fan assembly. will look tonight and see if I can get a decent shot if so will post tomorrow.

Joe, sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I lost the post. As far as the trimming of the cowl, my only thought was that you need to limit the gaps around the edges to force the air through the rad instead of being able to "leak" out the sides. If you can feel lots of air coming through the rad when the fan is on, then you are prob fine.

On another note, you say that you reversed the fan to make it a pusher. Do you mean that you installed a new pusher fan? Reversing a puller fan doesn't make it a pusher. Jag

JR,
I reversed the blade on the fan and installed it in front of the radiator, push, pull, suck, blow? Hell I don't know, it blows plenty of air thru the core which is all that matters. Right? I believe it is a 2200cfm but would have to check...
Just posted another thread today, would like to hear your comments, regarding lowering the front. Thanks, good to hear from you...
