Question radiator fan problems

I am currently having troubles with my cooling so i am upgrading to eletric fans and i have a couple of ? They are what is good cfm to be pulled accross the rad? I have located a black magic elec fan that pulls 2800 cfm, the other ? is I can get two fans for $150 less and use one as a puller and one as a pusher but they only create about 1200cfm each, will that be equivelant to the black magic fan?

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Don't use electric fans. Use the stock fan with a thermostatic clutch and the proper shroud for your engine and fan.

If you don't have a working fan shroud your engine will overheat, usually at idle or low speeds.

Make sure all of your rubber flaps are in place around the radiator support or your engine will overheat at cruising speeds.

Make sure you are using a 50/50 coolant mix in your radiator.

Put a good RobertShaw brand 192/195F thermostat in.

Check your fan belts...

Keep the stock setup and go with a big aux pusher mounted in front then. Set it up to kick in at about 210F. Make sure your stock setup has a thermostatic fan, shroud, and is in good condition.

Not...

Try a shroud and if you still have problems get the aux pusher but I doubt that you will need it.

Don't try one of those flex fans either, -they are worthless!

Torque,

Do you mean the stock 5 blade flex fans?

No, he means the aftermarket fan blades.

I put a stock 7 blade fan on mine.

No cooling or over-heating problems here.

Mil1ion is correct, the aftermarket units are worthless. While the stock flex fans work well the best setup is still the stock thermostatic clutch fan. Less noise and less power draw.

BUT YOU MUST HAVE A FAN SHROUD!!!

I agree. I'd like to get a clutch fan for my 460.

I would also say that electric fans are more trouble than they're worth. They just don't move enough air. You could get away with it if you set it up right, though.

Memorial day we went wheelin' and my cousin truck had nothing but problems. It was HOT and we were idling most of the time so that just made things worse. He has a chebby 350 with dual electric fans and the thing would overheat every 20 minutes or so. He'd shut it down but could never restart without a jump cuz the fans drained the battery. We had to carry a spare battery to swap in to make it through the day.

The problem he as is the electric fans don't cool fast enough, which makes them run ALL the time. His alternator is probably not rated to handle the fans either so the battery drains in no time.

Granted, it's a chebby, but I have since abandon the electric fan swap for mine after that.

I changed the stock 5 blade fan on my 79 F250 S/C (400) to an aftermarket clutch with an OEM 7 blade Ford fan. The temperature dropped 10 - 15 F depending on conditions. I also changed out the stock rad for a larger 460 rad.

I pull a 4500 # TT and the coolant temperature has never exceeded 205 F. It is a treat now, knowing I won't have any overheating problems.

First time user.

Is there a bolt-on fan clutch for older ('75 302) 4 blade original fan? I was planning also a electric fan conversion, but for the opposite: my truck gets too cold during winter. But after reading this discussion, I'm considering a thermostatic clutch.

Just go to the scrap yard and scavenge a whole fan assy. The fans fasten on differently.
