Hi guys, thinking about my 600+ stroker being built for my 79 F-150, will a stock 4 row radiator carry the cooling on this size engine? Will also have PS,PB,A/C. I see adding a elec. pusher along with the stock fan clutch setup. Trying to avoid the upgrade to an aluminum rad. although I know it will be better, just a cost factor right now. What ya"ll opinion?
i would upgrade the radiator.that stock radiator was designed for a 400" engine and you've got 200 cubes on that.there is a radiator for the f250 camper special that has a 7" (i think) taller core or you can get an aftermarket radiator.i wouldn't skimp on the radiator.
You are spending the money to make 600+ hp, and you are going to skimp on the cooling system?
Go aluminum. You will end up there eventually, no reason to not do it now.
75F350, you are correct on the skimping part, I don't want to short change myself at this point. Just trying to stay on budget for the total build of the truck. Went way over budget on the engine for starters, then you want to do the rest to matck the engine and that blows the budget quick. Any suggestion on the brand name of alum radiators. I have looked at the BE COOL, GRIFFIN for starters.
Ron Davis makes good radiators but i dont see on their site where one may be a factory replacement for your truck....maybe you could give them a call if you are interested in one.
The BeCool direct repaplacement radiator is pretty spendy.
I use a two row universal one from Jegs. It is only a two row but does a great job of keeping the truck cool (521 cubic inches 12:1). I run dual electric fans, and i dont even turn them on when driving. Even in hot temps the truck rarely sees any engine temps over 200 deg.
You will be very happy with an aluminum radiator. The one I use was less then 200 bucks. Much cheaper than the 650 they want for the direct fit. Hopefully this can keep you closer to your budget. I completly understand about builds costing much more than anticipated, but the cooling system is probably not the place you want to cut corners on, you know.......
I replaced my radiator with a stock replacement. It was $160, aluminum, two row and it cools very well. Now, mind you I just have a stock 302 at the moment, but the temp gauge doesn't even enter the NORMAL range unless I have the AC on full blast while idling in traffic during a 100 degree afternoon here in south Texas. I don't know how much heat your engine produces, but I just wanted to toss that out there... just in case... and it sounds like I have a radiator similar to 75F350.<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

75F350, it will be about 525cid with 9.5 cr, if you don't mind, please send a personal note and give some more detail on the model and fan setup you used. I am interested in going that route, thanks, Tom
well, i have a stock 460 10.5 cr, with a direct repalcement 4 core, with an electric fan yanked off of a t-bird, and two additional pushers just in case, a 160 thermostat, today it reached 90 degrees, and the engine didnt get over 170 degrees...mind you that the t-brd fan is 18" diameter and pushes 4000 cfm....

I've got a mildly worked, (~400hp) 460 in a '79 that I tow with - 18600 gvw. I've towed in 100 degree weather in traffic and at 80 mph - coolant runs 180 deg F max. I had the stock HD 460 rad recored with a 4 row Modine Louver fin copper core. I use a clutch fan from a later model 460 dually and a full shroud. (Note: make sure the fan is half in the shroud/half out. Pull thru Auto/truck fans are mixed flow, (ie. part radial, part axial flow). The louver fin core is more effcient than the stock core. I also use a large trans cooler. When the clutch fan comes on at idle it moves so much air it makes any automotive electric fan I've seen look like a joke. Only down side is it probably pulls 10-15hp when fully coupled at higher speed...but you can't get something for nothing. Now lets see; 15hp = about 12Kw, to get twelve KW @ 14 Vdc for an equivalent electric fan, you would need about 860 amps...not likely!
Aluminum rads are nice, I've got one in my race car, but you have got to keep the coolant in tip top shape or they begin to lose their capacity pretty quick. Unless weight is an issue, (not likely in a truck), I'd go with a high quality copper core for longer life.
OK, with you'll help and input, I will go this route, step by step:
1) Use the Modine 4 row stock copper rad. I have now with full shroud . ( I wish I knew the CFM of a stock system). OEM fan clutch.
2) Add an elec. pusher fan up front.
3) Switch to an elec. fan like an OEM Lincoln Mark VIII ( somewhere in the 4500-5000 cfm pull). Wrecking yard find.
4) Go with an alumium rad. for the 700 hp range with matching elec fan.
5) Come back to FTE for more help!
