Smile Hello and a question

Hello to all. New guy here. Been lurking for a while and love the forum. I will be buying my X very soon and have been doing a ton of my research here. Thanks for the community guys its really helpful.
So here come the questions...

1. I have been reading the need for a sway bar and then the radius arms. If you add a lift, 1. do you still need the sway bar? 2. Do you still Need the radius arms? 3. Will the x still have rear steer/travel if I do lift it?

She will be 4x4 and I am leaning towards a DR 4.5 lift and adding their steering stabilizers. Any thoughts?

Thanks for it all in advance and glad to be here...

I think it depends on how you lift the rear. But first...I think ALL Excursions benefit from a rear sway bar...well...my 2WD doesn't seem to need one though...but anyway...

If you are just placing blocks underneath the original (weak) spring packs, then yes, I'd do a sway bar. Some sort of radius rod/traction bar etc. etc. will be beneficial as axle wrap will only be MORE pronounced once the blocks are under there.

Great thread on the Tuff Country bars goin' on right now. I do not know it Landyot's Radius Rods work with 4.5" of lift. You'd have to get in contact with him and ask.

If you are going with an all spring lift...then that may depend on the new spring pack's weight rating.

Just remember the more block you have the more leverage the axle has on your springs. Bang for the buck if you do not have a sway bar IMO get one. Maybe test drive a 2003 or newer that has one stock.

Landyot can make a rod for that kind of lift if you still have a problem with "rear steer" after the sway bar. There are other options as well.

All spring with stock 2" block would handle the best, but more than likely ride the worst. Have you picked the lift method yet? From the .5 in there I assume springs are involved.

I didnt realize that the 2003 and newer already had a sway bar...So how bad is the rear steer on these vehicles.

The 4.5 inch lift from Donaho does not replace the springs..IF I go with the 5 inch lift which does, should I then not need to worry about the rear travel?
Thanks for the help guys

With the 4.5" the stock springs will feel the same, but body roll will be more pronounced. A sway bar will take care of 90% of the issues.

For the springs on the 5" get the spring rate cut sheet from Donahoe and compare it to this:
2001 Excursion
SPRING SPECIFICATIONS — REAR LEAF

Series/Model Combined Rating @ Ground (lbs.)
Number of Leaves Total Thickness @ Pad (in.)
Length (in.)
Width (in.)
Deflection Rate (lbs. per in./ spring)
Rating Each @ Pad (lbs. per spring)
4x2 5250 6 2.5 58.08 3.00 410 2275
4x4 5250 7(1) 3.16 58.08 3.00 410 2275
(1) 7th leaf is an anti-windup leaf.

410# per 1" is the deflection rate of the stockers. Higher rate will wrap and wander less but ride firmer. Softer rate will ride like a caddy but wrap and deflect easier.

There's trade offs.
