Well my cam went out in a hour of run time with the wrong oil restrictor kit that i put in. So i pulled it apart to find that it junked all the bearings minus the cam bearings while also grinding some nice grooves in the crank. The crank is a the very bottom of the spec for .020 under already. Is it safe to go .030 under i know they make bearings for it but its just kind of iffy. I am going to put the thing through some abuse so i firgured i would ask.
They'll go .040..at which point I think there are no more bearing options that I know off. There is plenty of meat on those bones..that is not an issue.
the cam bearings are OK? an oil restrictor kit would not cause cam lobes to wipe. the typical oil restrictor kit for these engines restricts oil to the cam bearings to save the oil for the crank.
Ya the cam bearings are spotless. I just know that the kit i put in (now i know anyway) being the five peice moroso kit is not to be used with hydraulic lifters. All i know is that one lifter was callapsed, 3 others were ground off big time, and 2 cam lobes where worn off bad.
When an engine destructs that way small particles of metal are carried thru the oil into all of the bearings. The filter only stops a certain % of the particles (called beta ratio in the filter engineering world). The particles embed into all of the bearings and essentially ruin them so they should ALL be replaced. Bearings are made to absorb those particles but they will only absorb so many.
Your oil pump will need to be replaced also.

If you check out TMI's post about oil pressure on the 400 you see that the most important thing is the clearance between the bearings and the crank. check it out!
