Open vs Closed knuckles

I have a chance to buy a open knuckle disk brake D44 (Non HD) from a 76 F250 4X4 and I would use it to replace my closed knuckles D44 (Non HD) w/ drums (both low pinion).
The deal is $450 for the front w/ disk, hubs, springs and steering (ram rod type) NP435, NP205, D60 rear w/drums and springs, drive lines.

I understand the advantage of disk brakes and this would be a direct bolt on (I think, from 76 to 73), but what is the advantage of the open knuckle vs closed knuckles (seals better, no water in oil, stronger)???

Is this a good deal?
Thanks.

I have owned both over the years and niether one bothers me. The open knuckles are a little easier to work on because you don't have all of those seals to deal with. And a major advantage of the open knuckle is there are no trunnion bearings to go bad on you. Another advantage is that if you are a 4wheeler and you think you broke an axle. With an open knuckle you can see the joint but with a closed knuckle you have to tear down for inspection.

Karljay, that sounds like a good deal to me. I don't have a beef with either version either, but as you know the open knuckle is considered much more desireable. I believe it to be somewhat better because crud doesn't get trapped in there like the closed knuckles. And was pointed out, they are much easier to work on. I'm going to do this myself eventually to get those disc brakes...its a critical upgrade in my book.

If your knuckles ain't bleeding you did something wrong.

I think the main advantage would be the disk brakes, which are worth the $450. You will need a proportioning valve too.
