i have a 78 f150 and it already looks like a beast. now i want it to sound like a beast. I cant afford a whole new top of the line exhaust but i would like to get some noise. i want it to sound like a V8 without putting an actual V8 in. i unhooked the catalyac converter and it sounds awesome but that is not legal and the school cop is already on my butt. if you could give me some hopefully legal ideas besides glass pacs that would be awesome. thanks

It has to be an 8 to sound like an 8. If you have an I6 just save your money until.

I've heard it said by some of the more recent 300/6 owners saddled w/ emmisions requirements, that a 300 w/ cats but no muffler, just straight pipe after cat is pretty tough sounding. I just put some flowmaster Delta 50's on my 302 but it has dual 2 1/4 pipes and is a V8. A Flowmaster probably will sound tougher than not. It's also suppose to have some scavenging ability to improve hp/torque and gas mileage. I once had a company van to drive that had a Ford "expirimental" 300-6 propane conversion (the company had a large fleet and got special deals from Ford to test stuff) The engine was devoid of alot of polution control. It sounded pretty sweet when revving on the freeway through free breathing pipes. Sixes have their own unique sound appeal, revel in it, build it.... or get a V8 if that's what you long for.

Joe, No "I" engine is gonna sound like a "V" engine even if you run single straight pipes from every exhaust port. You can make a "I" loud yes, but because of the design it wont sound like a "V", even if you run it on natural gas. Listen to a "V" 6 vr "I"6.

I had a 300 I6 in my 1991 F-100 and I put the Heart Throb exaust from JC Whitney on it and it sounded more like a V8 than any other 6 cylinder I have ever heard but it still wasn't enough to fool someone. The tips looked kind of funny too. But now I have a 390 and have no trouble getting it to sound like a V8 for some reason.

John is right. I have a 1993 F-150 w/300 I6 and glass pack behind the cat. It sounds good, smooth - with a little rumble. I also have a 1977 F-250 w/351M and dual exhaust. The truck never had a catalytic converter. It has that rumbling thunder that only V-8's make. The six can be made to sound good (real good because it's a Ford), but it won't ever make the V-8 sound. It's your truck, do what you can afford, and enjoy driving that old Ford.
