thinking about deleting the muffler

I have a dynamax 4 inch from the turbo back. it has a muffler in it and i am thinking about deleting it and making it a complete straight pipe. how much louder in the cab will it be and what are the down falls to a straight pipe. any gains?

You wont notice any difference in the cab,Will make a good difference in the EGT,, if thats an issue. I always felt just improving flow was the greatest benefit.

I will disagree with MRBASS on seeing any difference in EGTs. The reason is, your 4" system that you have now most likely already has a straight thru muffler on it, with virtually no restriction. Adding a straight pipe wouldn't gain you anything in this case, except for it being louder. It will most likely give you some drone in the cab, especially on the highway, which I personally found rather annyoing and put my muffler back on. However, it also provides a good bit of sound outside the cab.

It just depends on what you're after. What are your goals with going to a straight pipe?

for some reason i am just thinking that the muffler might be clogged up. it has been on scine 99 and with the chip i am thinking she might be full of soot. plus i would like to hear it a bit more outside the cab but no inside. it is already hard enough to talk in there as it is. to be honest i dont really know why i want to do it. just a change i guess

i just did it the other day, and im not going back to a muffler. with the muffler, i had a hellish drone around 1750-2250 rpm, and now with a straight pipe, i would say 80-90% of it is GONE! contrary to JTharvey.. i do love it, the turbo whistles ALOT better, the engine has a throatier sound when you get above 1750 RPM from inside the cab, but it is no means intrusive. just very nice sounding. it isnt any louder inside i dont think. i tend to drive around town with my back windows down more though. you also lose 25-30 pounds in a muffler.

As far as I know there are no mufflers with 5" inlet/outlet. I could be wrong. So look for a restriction there....if you wanna be picky.

I guess the best way is to just try it. Get some straight pipe from a big rig shop, some couplers & clamps, and put it on. I got away doing it cheap, and I believe strokin did too -- like under $40.
