January, did a ball joint repair. just did an oil change this weekend. while under the truck I noticed the caliper had some wettness on it. When I checked it out, it seemed to me like it was coming from around the seal where the axel meets the differential tube on the passenger side. There is not a lot of fluid there, but it is noticable. Any ideas on what this is.
a little more info please! front axle or rear axle?
in the front the axle seals are inside the tubes along side of the ring gear carrier, the rears are out board .is it oil or a heavy grease like oil? or thin like brake fluid?
how many miles?
front axel. 79 almost 80000 miles . the oil didn,t seem to be very tacky. so I don't know it to be thick. I have no brake fluid lost. The oil looks like it is coming from behind the sealat the end of that tube. When we did the ball joints and removed the axel everything was dry inthere, so I guess the seal you mentioned is all the way up by the pumpkin
yes the main seal is way inside .to change it is a major job,the entire side or sides most come apart , the axles most come out.then the ring gear carrier most come out and then you can get at them.
you say you had the axle out. that seal is tight on the axle shaft when it goes back in, sounds to me you messed up the inner seal "popped the spring out" and its draining out of the tube now .
make sure the diff is full, clean the area with brake clean to dry it off, drive it and watch it for a few days.if it comes back you have a big job ahead of you.
take a look in my one tech gallery when i did my gear swap it shows where the seal is.
Sometimes when you remove an axle a bit of oil will leak into the axle tube and then you'll get what you're seeing. I would clean it up as best I could with brake cleaner and keep an eye on it. You can probably pry the outer axle seal out a bit to clean in behind it too. The outer seal is there just to keep junk out of the tube, not to seal any oil.
Like Charlie said, if it comes back you've got some work to do.
You should consider having krewat help with finding and paying for the Dana Super 60, perhaps you can have him tag along to Denali, Moab, and Baja as your rock crawling spotter, the only places you will likely ever need that MUCH BEEF
