Bought ole red 5 years ago for $700, she's a 77 f-150, 400, c-6, full time 4 wheel drive, mechanicly when i bought her she was perfect, body was all rusted out but fixed her. Been an every day driver since. Question is rear end has started to growl ( checked oil and replaced u joints) the pinion comes out of the front of the diff, I'm wondering what kind of rear end is in it (theres no diff cover). I love ole red so she is parked until the weather smartens up and I can work on her. Any help would gratefully be appreciated.
Just wondering, does it have a metal tag on the bolt circle of the axle? If so, I'd be curious to know if it has a 3.00 gearing or 3.50 gearing, and also if it has a limited slip. If it has the tag on the bolt circle, could you post the numbers.
I also have a full time 4wd and it has 3.50 gears, but was told some came with 3.00 gears, and I would really like to know more about that.

You do know you can buy pretty much any gear set you want for a 9" don't you? And even if you can't do it yourself, they are the cheapest to have replaced because you can hand them the chuck cutting the labor and agrivation cost.
The reason I posted that didn't have anything to do with wanting to switch gear sets. I thought all 1/2 ton 73-79s had 3.50 gears, but everynow and then you might find a full time 4wd w/3.00 gears, It was just a curious and what to know(if there are such things out there).
I plan on going to 4.30 or 4.56, haven't decided yet.
