It has never been known as a 400M except in Cheby magazine writers etc. The 351M 351W and 351C are the only Ford engines of this era with letter suffix designations for identification. The 351x engines all have the same bore and stroke as well as the FE engine designated as the 352. Model Year 1971 is the first year for 400 production.

you better start reading the stickers on the valve covers!
you might have me on there.. i'll be looking for a sticker with the 400m i think my neighbors 78 ltd had a 400m on the sticker. i know it had a 400 but that car is long gone.
no, your neighbor did not have a 400m on their sticker. There was no need to add an "M" onto the end of the 400, because it didn't need to differentiate itself from any other engine. The "M" isn't there to classify an engine as part of the "M" family. Its there to separate the 351M from the W, C, etc.
About the small block..based on my recent expenditures I think I'd have about $900-1100 in parts and machine shop labor. SO 1400-1600 seems bout right and, of course, shippping so I'd have to pay 1600-1800 and while the cost seems prohibitive It's worth it for warranty and to know it was done by a competent shop.
make sure they/you use a aftermarket timing assembly, the factory timing was the primary killer...it was set for epa emissions. look for a cam with at least a .480 Intake valve lift and a duration 212 to 218 @.050 this will be a good street cam. Crane cams 272H10 is in the ball park!
