electrical component question in engine bay

This is in my friends 72 f250 with a 360 engine. There is a 3x3" black box mounted next to the radiator that looks like its wired to the alternator. Then there is a small silver box @ 1x1/2" inch mounted next to the cylinoid up on the firewall that looks like its wired into the alt too. What are these two things and what do they do? He's having me help him put in new ignition and its the blind leading the blind here. Sorry if these are dumb questions.

electrical component question in engine bay

3x3" black box is the voltage regulator and the 1x1/2" box sounds a whole lot like the horn relay.
Have fun

Does the truck have an overdrive transmission? The little silver box has a fuse on it right? I believe it is the relay for the overdrive. Eric

Sparky is correct,I just popped the hood on my 72 to verify your observations,I have a black box (voltage regulator) and a smaller silver looking box (horn relay). Hayes Manuals have an excellent electrical section with full schematics, good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. I had a brainfart but figured out after posting that it was my volt regulator. it was driving me nuts cuz I couln't remember at the time! That little one really had me stumped. Horn relay makes sense though (no fuse and no od) never seen one like that before. I have a chiltons and it has no diagrams,Ill have to take a look at the hayes. thanks again!!!
