My tired old 2.3 was real unhappy today. While waiting in the bank line, it began to idle real rough. You could smell how rich it was, and even smell raw gas. When I started driving, it cleared up. I don't have code reader, but the CEL didn't come on (not sure if it even works!). I've though about throwing a new O2 sensor in, as it often idles crappy, or look at the IAC. Any suggestions? I don't put much money in the little bugger, as I'm almost ready to scrap it.
the o2 isn't a bad idea, the IAC isn't either, the IAT is in the airbox just past the filter, this is the temperature sensor for incomin air, it might be bad, but doesn't make for a grievous richness as you got. And as always check your air filter, cheap, and a clogged one will make you run rich.
Good plan- but the nearest hill in FL is 50 miles away! Actually, I've given up. I replaced 4 starters, 2 solenoids, the ignition switch, and the battery cables, and the latest starter (which I paid twice as much for at NAPA) is dying after one week of use! I'm lost on this one. It's a tired 2.3 w/ 200K on it, so I know it's not too much compression. The starters work great at first, but then seem to have trouble staying engaged. Flywheel is in good shape. The truck has so many issues, it's time to put 'er to rest. I got 3 years of daily driving for my $500 investment, so I'm OK with it.
200,000 miles on er? You're just breakin er in Gargoyle! I've got 314,000 with the original engine and tranny! Changed the clutch at 289,000.
I would test your fuel pressure. Sounds to me like the fuel pressure regulator might be starting to give up on ya. I think you should have around 40 PSI at idle.
The fuel pressure regulator would make it hard to crank?? The rest of the truck is shot, too. Could be 300K; I have no way of knowing. Everything leaks; Oil, trans fluid, coolant, p/s. The truck is actually totally rust free, and the cab actually has no dents, just the bed. Someone painted it w/ black spray cans, so it would have to be totally sanded out before it could be painted. I bought a used S-10 to get around in; when I have the cash, I'm going for a '98+ Ranger Flareside, or a '92-'96 F150. The old Ranger's gonna go cheap if somebody needs a solid builder.
It could.... If the injectors are loadin up the cylinders with fuel while you're tryin to crank it. Maybe not though. I do know if you put too much into a carburated engine and crank it over she will lock up from all the pressure.
