copyright advice

Let's say that, a few years ago I submitted two photos to be displayed on a photography website. Let's also say that the photos were published in a couple of photo books that the photo group puts out every year (which turned out to be nothing spectacular by any means). The photos are Copyrighted to me. It states that under the photos on the website. What actions can I take to get the photos removed from the website and any of the photography groups' publications? I've sent them a letter stating that I am no longer allowing them to display, distribute, or publish my photos from here on out. I sent the letter last week and have not heard anything. Since the photos are copyrighted to me, I should be able to request this, correct? They are my photos. I took them, I printed them, I gave the site permission to display them. If the photography group does not do as I ask, are they violating the copyright? How far can I go to get this done? I know it's a bit vague, but I don't want to give out too much detail. All info is appreciated.

You might want to check the terms of service for that website. It's entirely possible that simply by submitting your photos you transfered the copyright to them, or at least gave them sufficient rights to display and publish it. IF that is the case then there is not much you can do about it because you gave away your rights. If you're serious about it, your next step is to contact a lawyer that deals with copyright issues to see if they think you have a case. Good luck!

Assuming that you didn't give up your rights by submitting them to the site, if they still won't cooperate, your next step might be contacting their hosting company. Of course this only works if they don't do the hosting themselves.

Since you submitted to them, you've almost certianly given them the right to display the images. If you are serious about getting them removed, it's Lawyer time.

You still own the copyright but you probably gave them a right to display the pictures when you submitted them. Check your user agreement.
