I expect that the new solenoid is going to fix it if the battery is good.
There can be a high resistance in an old cable due to corrosion build up under the insulation.
Put a volt meter across the battery and engage the starter for ten seconds. If the voltage drops to ten volts or less, change the battery.

we figured it out. i had overlooked my grounds and had not grounded the engine to the frame, breaking the ground loop. i went ahead and replaced all the pos and neg wires anyway and bought a new solenoid, even though the other was not yet bad. i figured, 12 bucks for a lifetime warranty is a good deal. i would rather replace it now than get stranded. thanks everyone for all your help. i haven't actually started it yet but plan to go crank it over here in about an hour or so...first time running in 4 years!! im excited.
